Isn’t the argument that this unarmed ship was not a military target?

That's how wars go on forever. Better for both sides to go hard and make it short.

I get the counter argument that this is basically a mini Pearl harbor sneak attack and we would be incensed if this happened to us but I suspect most voters aren't going to be quite that empathetic.

The ship was unarmed. It was far away from Iran so its not like it could have escaped to anywhere we couldn't have gotten to. Why didn't we just capture it? Those prisoners could have been assets. That ship could have been an asset.

Could it be that the purpose of sinking it had nothing to do with war?
 
justsecurity.org has a history of doing excellent in-depth pieces on maritime law and the laws of war. I just checked the site and nothing on the sinking of the Dena on there yet, but I full expect there to be by the end of the day or tomorrow at the latest.
 
While we are undoubtedly succeeding tactically in this conflict, I think it's becoming more and more obvious with each passing day that we are failing strategically. Iran is successfully exploiting the fact that while the U.S. is now facing intense pressure from our allies in the Middle East and beginning to send shockwaves through the global economy, Iran still holds the Straight of Hormuz firmly in its control and holding a massive percentage the global energy market at its mercy. They also know that the longer amount of time this conflict goes on without an end in sight, it will politically and economically erode the Trump administration, so they have no reason to, nor intention of, coming back to the negotiating table. There is no longer any reason for Iran to stop its nuclear program, and in fact there is more incentive than ever before to develop it. There was a nearly finalized agreement on the table that could have resolved most of the issues but that still got the Supreme Leader blown up. The U.S. and Israel have truly stepped in it now.
