“… The Trump administration and Israel’s government have signaled they want to make a new push for normalization. But with Iran now on the back foot, there is less incentive for Saudi Arabia to set aside other concerns to move forward. It will need time to assess the implications of the shocking advantage Israel demonstrated with its military and intelligence capabilities—and its high tolerance for the risks of using them.

Senior Gulf officials are concerned their investment in relations with Washington, including hosting President Trump’s high-profile trip to the Gulf last month, haven’t paid off in influence. Trump’s repeated encouragement of Israel’s attacks and threats against Iran’s supreme leader made them fear a wider war.

In the end, Trump ordered a limited strike on Iran’s main nuclear sites, then brokered a cease-fire that stopped the fighting, at one point warning Israel to turn its bombers around. But while the worst scenarios were avoided, Gulf leaders are going to reassess the landscape before moving forward.

“Everything is in flux,” said Bader al-Saif, an expert on Persian Gulf and Arabian affairs at Kuwait University.

…The Saudis have made it clear they won’t do a deal while the war continues unresolved in the Gaza Strip, where more than 56,000 people have been killed so far, according to Palestinian authorities who don’t say how many were combatants.

Saudi Arabia is also insisting on a credible pathway to a Palestinian state—something Israel firmly rejects—in hopes of addressing what it sees as the root of the conflict.

“It’s going to take a lot of work, and the space isn’t there now,” a Saudi official said about establishing diplomatic relations with Israel. “The urgency is the state of Palestine and not the Iranian risk.”…”

The social media aspect of 2025 conflicts makes getting details borderline impossible. What are “unofficial” sources other than folks online? It’s a waiting game to see what they find I guess.

Agree, and it's especially hard when people in the administration (and many outside) are constantly using social media declarations to undermine and contradict reporting that's being done by journalists who actually work really hard to fact check, such as the NYT and CNN.

Totally agree about Trump and his insistence to just make stuff up and then stick to it but in this case it was a random Twitter link saying Israel had broken ceasefire and look how quickly folks on this board and on X picked it up and immediately believed it.

I know. It's a problem in both directions. I don't think it's an EQUAL problem in both directions, but we'd all do well to be more suspicious of "breaking news" unless it's from highly reputable journalists who have strict confirmation and factchecking standards.

I think in this country Trump and his loons are more in front of us so we see it constantly and we are almost 10 years into it so we are just done with it. With that said, go on X and look into Gaza/Israel. It’s pretty clear the Palestinian wing does an amazing job just filling social media with constant stories about Israel and how evil they are. Now I’m sure the premise of some of those stories might be accurate but it’s a lot of “sources say Israel did this” and the account has like 100 people. Also another common thing is “I know people on the ground in Palestine and they say it’s not being reported but….” It’s pretty rampant.

It’s like when Trump says “folks are saying.” The folks are Trump and he just made it up.

My only exposure to X is what nycfan is gracious enough to post here, so I'll take your word for it. I just think we don't do well when we try to equivalate in any way disinformation spread by random people on a notoriously unreliable social media platform and disinformation regurgitated constantly by every level of our Article II national leadership.

Totally fair. I think this conversation started though based on a link from X that Israel had attached Iran and posters here were implying ceasefire is over now because of it. The point is how quickly people believed something that was being reported on X.
