We actually have a few times. This is an interesting history: Trump’s military parade is an outlier in peacetime, but parades and reviews have a long history

I'm fully onboard with your point, though. That jerk Rand Paul made me agree with him on this. "I've never been a big fan of goose-stepping soldiers in big tanks and missiles rolling down the street. So if you asked me, I wouldn't have done it . . . We were always different than the images you saw of the Soviet Union and North Korea. We were proud not to be that."

Notice what countries were omitted from his list of goose-steppers. I'm sure it's a coincidence that he forgot about the military power with which the word (and act) is indelibly associated.

France celebrates Bastille Day every year with a military parade. Countries like Spain, Belgium and Ireland will do so on special occasion like the 100 year anniversary of Ireland's Easter Rising.

Everything Trump does is not the end of the Republic.

In a word: yes. National defense is more important than public tv and radio. This parade is being put on, on part, to boost military recruitment - which until recently has been down. I don’t mind spending money on things that support national defense

PBS and NPR are fine but they can survive without federal dollars. National defense > Bert and Ernie.

An educated populace supports national defense more than anything else ever possibly could.

And further associating the military directly with Trump will undermine it in ways that cannot be undone. Do you seriously want half of the country to detest our armed forces because they are viewed as the personal playthings of the most hated man in the history of the country?
