Someone correct me on the legal aspects, but my understanding is that at this point, they CANT replace him with another candidate. It’s not just about having the name on the ballot. If he was to drop out then stein would win as the top vote getter from those remaining.

Can someone clarify?

According to the statutes on the books, he cannot be replaced. To put it differently, the GOP cannot nominate another candidate, unless MRob dies. It's not a question of the ballot (which is a different issue). No votes for Mark Robinson can be given to anyone else except Mark Robinson. The GOP can announce in a press release that Pat McCrory is the new candidate, but that won't make it so. I don't know if NC has write-ins for governor; if so, then conceivably the Pubs could try a write-in campaign for McCrory. But as long as Mark Robinson is alive and conscious, there is no way for any alternate GOPer to collect votes from a listed name on the ballot.

That's what the statute book says. Whether the NC Supreme Court would find an exception, I can't say. It doesn't look much like the GOP is trying to replace him, though.
