This administration will squander American goodwill like no other. American soft power will disappear.
It was clear in the first administration...Trump treated allies worse than his enemies.
These heavy handed tactics will have unintended consequences they have not considered.
And this is why Xi loves having Trump in office. Trump is the Chinese Communist Party's best friend ever. Xi thinks in five year plans (or longer) and Trump has trouble thinking five minutes into the future.

Colombia isn’t opposed to repatriation flights. They are opposed to the deportees being cuffed and shackled in military cargo planes.
In many of these LatAm countries (certainly in CR) you need legislative or executive approval for foreign military vessels to enter.

Deportation flights have gone off without a hitch all over Latin America. Trump wanted to do it this way (which while we're at it is much more expensive to the US taxpayer).

China had already made great inroads in the last two decades of American distraction (since 9/11, LatAm foreign policy was on the back burner). china has much greater influence economically across the region. Trade wars across Latin America only benefits them.

Colombia's number one export to the US? Oil. No wonder MAMA wants to drill.

Colombia? Really? I had thought Venezuela had all the oil, and that Colombia kinda got screwed by the shale. Shows what I know. Ain't no geologist.

The irony here is that Petro was politically flailing with approval ratings in the low 30s. Getting into a trade war will piss off the wealthy, but might help him with his base.

Trump got bitch-slapped. He backed down, showing the world what a pussy he really is.

Hey Pubs, from previous posts, you've proposed "is the world laughing at us" as the measure of foreign policy. Well, the world is laughing at us. As well they should. So fucking frustrating.

So did the Colombian president back down or not? I keep seeing conflicting things about that

It looks to me like Trump got exactly what he wanted - Colombia is now accepting the deportees on military planes.

I think it’s no harm no foul if you only look at this one situation but what Trump and his buffoons never understand is everything can’t be a fight. The world is complex. Provoking a fight on everything is stupid and wasteful. He huffs and puffs around and then when it lands back to where it was anyway - he claims victory when in reality, it was status quo and it was net negative because now relationships are strained.

Colombia accepted over 120 planes last year under Biden, an average of one every three days, without complaint or the US showing their ass. They accepted over 400 altogether. Trump "gained" something that was already there while making an ass out of himself and our country. This was theater and bad theater at that.

And once again, the media doing Trump's bidding by reporting misleading info from the White House.

Let's be clear: Colombia has been accepting deported migrants on flights for years. They did it under Biden as well. The difference is that under Biden, they had pre-authorization to do it and didn't bring the migrants back to Colombia on military planes and in handcuffs.

Petro didn't accept the flights because they were military planes entering Colombia without any pre-authorization, instead of the civilian planes that the Biden administration used for the job. So of course he hand them turned away. This new round of negotiations, the one that right-wingers like to say that Trump forced Petro to back down on, was nothing more than Petro laying some ground rules for Trump to follow: Yes, we'll accept the flights as we've always done. But the migrants won't be handcuffed, and you'll need to get pre-authorization ahead of time.

It's unclear whether the military planes would be allowed. Trump's press secretary claims that Petro agreed to all his demands, including the use of military planes. Petro tweeted after the deal was reached that he would allow the flights on the condition that they arrived on civilian planes. I tend to believe him over Leavitt since she's already lied about Petro capitulating to all of Trump's demands. It sounds like Trump was the one capitulating in order to accomplish the same goal that the Biden administration had already accomplished over the last couple of years without using strongarm tactics.

The article I posted seems to say basically of that. Under the agreement, military planes can be used, which is what Trump wanted, but the deportees won't be in handcuffs - what Petro wanted.

It made Trump look like the wimp he is. His idea was to be a rough ,tough bully and he ended up saying, "Please, Mr. Petro, is it okay if I use military planes? I promise to be more respectful." He also looked stupid for starting this in the first place.

I think Trump overreacted, which isn't surprising, but he also got what he wanted - use of military planes.

Not sure where you get the groveling vibe.

Trump backed down. No tariffs, no handcuffs, no tough guy posturing. What difference do the planes make? That wasn't the real point and you know it. He wanted to look like a tough guy with the military hauling them off in literal chains. He ended up looking stupid.

He backed down on handcuffs/chains but got military planes. Seems like both sides gave something and got something, right?
