My understanding is that this poster might have some insight on this issue. Either way, I don't think it's set in stone that the guns were not stored properly. Didn't the Sandy Hook shooter kill his mom (or caretaker) to get access to the guns she had properly locked away?
he definitely killed his mom but i believe that he had access to the guns regardless. a lot of people lay a lot of blame at his mother's feet for not doing more about his mental health / allowing someone with such clear and serious mental health issues to have access to so many deadly weapons.

my mother is from newtown, a bunch of our family still lives there. one of my aunts is in sandy hook. we have connections to quite a few of the victims and their families.

Not crucifying the mom but pointing to the absurdity of our gun culture.

There is plenty of absurdity there, but I don't see a link between that and a sheriff's deputy possessing a firearm. Police are armed here. Most police officers also carry weapons when they are off duty.

Unless she didn’t store it all her storage system failed.

No storage system is perfect. As I said earlier, there is a guy whose entire YouTube channel is dedicated to showing people how to pick locks on gun safes. This wasn't a four year old who found a gun under his mom's bed. This was a grown man who very easily could have simply bought a gun if he wanted one that badly. It is probably better off for everyone that he stole a pistol instead of buying an AR.

Mostly the portable handgun safes.
I figured it was a storage cabinet or one of those file safe type boxes. Good gun safes offer very stout security. The gun cabinets don’t offer much resistance to determination and 10 minutes of time.
Hell, some of them are wood and have glass doors so you can admire the hand built double rifle or competition skeet gun stored within.

I’m not doubting what you say but the empirical evidence tells us her system failed. If her safety protocols led to him accessing the gun against her wishes she effed something up.

I’d bet however that he had open access to her weaponry.

I read somewhere that there was a Fla State student on campus during this shooting that was also at a high school where there was a mass shooting.
