I agree with your first two sentences but not with the third. Handgun bans have been proposed by mainstream members of the DNC. They state they want to ban “semi-autos” which would effectively ban 90% of handguns in production.
The states (like NY and CA) that don't (or believe they can't) ban people from carrying hand guns, also make it very, very difficult to get a permit to carry.

North Carolina no longer requires a permit to purchase a handgun.
Open carry of firearms is legal in North Carolina without a permit, as long as the individual is legally allowed to own the gun.
A bill has been introduced that would allow for permitless concealed carry.

It would mean the guns I currently own would be banned and would not impact criminals that already own these weapons unlawfully and use them in crimes every day. If I’m getting into a gunfight with an intruder, I don’t want him to have all the rounds he needs while I’m dead in the water after 7 shots. The police are much more highly trained in firearms than the general public, and they still are taught to magdump because 1) hitting a moving target in a gunfight is not easy and 2) people don’t typically go down immediately after the first round hits them.
This seems like an argument for no gun control at all. More or less “I don’t want to be outgunned, therefore don’t regulate my guns.”

I don’t think it is. Handguns are in common use, and IMO banning them would primary hurt law-abiding citizens. Machine guns are largely banned and are very rarely used in crimes, and I don’t want to change that. The issue is just where to draw that line.

Sounds totally safe and wouldn't cause anxiety at all seeing people carrying guns out in the open.

NYPD officer killed in the skyscraper was a bangladeshi immigrant who had two young children, wife pregnant with a third.

I would be interested to see if the guy really had CTE or he was just someone who was mad he didn't become a NFL player, and felt like he was a loser with where he was in life currently.

It gets worse... As of December 1, 2025, HB43 removes the requirement for tinted windows to be inspected during annual safety inspections. So you can ride around with your guns and your blacked out windows.

Riding around in that Park Avenue part of the city yesterday my daughter and I were spotting all of the Bigger Than They Need Or Ought To Be black vans with blacked out windows driving like they own everything.

Since there isn't a mass stabbing thread...

Marine stops hyper religious lunatic.

A detail that neither CNN, nor MSNBC, nor NY Times, LA Times, etc has reported as of a few minutes ago.

Armed Marine veteran stops Michigan Walmart stabbing suspect

An armed bystander was seen on video heroically stopping a knife-wielding man who authorities say stabbed 11 people at a Walmart in Michigan on Saturday.

The man, identified by family as Derrick Perry, is seen in the video pointing a firearm at the suspect in the store’s parking lot in Traverse City as he and other bystanders shout "drop the knife!" Perry is a Marine veteran, the New York Post reported, citing his family.

"What they did was amazing," Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters during a media briefing on Sunday.

11 people stabbed and thankfully not a single fatality.

that's why we don't have a mass stabbing thread. it is exceedingly difficult to inflict a lot of carnage with a knife. not remotely comparable to what can be done with a gun.

How many people get in gun fights with intruders? Its not a common scenario.

Over time, those criminals would be very unlikely to have those now illegal guns. Just like sawed-offs and automatic weapons. When is the last time we had real problems with those?

People use their guns to defend themselves from intruders all the time. From the last month or so:

Only three of those were a shootout where the burglar exchanged fire. In the other incidents, the burglar was shot and no mention of the burglar shooting back. A scenario that could easily happen without semi-auto and detachable mag.

What wouldn't happen is 48 of the top 50 mass killings in America. 48 were semi-auto with detachable mag. The two that weren't were the Washington navy yard with pump shotgun and detachable mag and the University of Texas bell tower which was mostly bolt action rifle.

statistically irrelevant anecdotal evidence.

There were plenty more that involved shootouts. I just got tired of copying and pasting. Regardless of how you or I feel about the issue, a handgun ban and/or a semi-auto ban is not going to happen anytime in the foreseeable future. I am thankful about that, but can understand why you would feel otherwise.

Notice I said "almost nobody". Banning semi automatic handguns wouldn't garner more than 25% of the most ardent Democrats. If you're going to assign what parties want to do based on the extremes, then we can't really have a discussion at all.
