What I have read is that the DoJ reached a conclusion that those who had first hand knowledge of Gaetz's particular perversions were of a sort as to make the unsympathetic witnesses. The old problem of criminals (other than the priests) seldom enlist nuns as co-conspirators.

Yeah, I've read some articles that claim that Trump is deliberately choosing these wackos/criminals/rapists as a test case to see just how much control he has over Congress, in this particular case the Senate. And if he can't get them through the Senate he'll just do what you said and appoint them anyway as a sign of his total power over the government. And I'm sure that any GOP Senator who won't vote to confirm any of these nominees will be immediately added to a "shit list" of Republicans who will be challenged in their next primary for reelection by a diehard Trumper.Recess appointment incoming!
These fucking idiots have to realize that a) with the country in the crapper, no primary challenge backed by Trump will succeed; and b) avoiding it will do nothing because they will lose in the general with the country in the crapper, even in red states.
They had the perfect chance four years ago. They could have gotten rid of the Trump problem for good and put themselves on the right side of history.
Or alternatively, receive a plain envelope with no return address, but a Moscow postmark, containing a memory stick with a video of said Senator engaging in activities with some underage boy/girl that said Senator would not prefer not to be used in campaign ads in his next re-election campaign.
I doubt that many Trump-backed Senate challengers in 2026 lose even if the economy goes into the shitter that quickly.

I've thought for a good while that either Fox News (and other blatant right-wing networks) goes, or our democracy and historic political stability goes. The problem is that any attempt at this point to do something about Fox will only lead to right-wing outrage and even violence, and Fox will just hide behind the freedom of the press, freedom of speech defenses. So we're pretty much screwed on that front.
