Saw it last evening and I agree 100% with your comments.
Not great, not terrible. Saw it on a giant imax screen so it was quite the spectacle, as expected. And they tied in the original well enough.
But as I suspected, I just didn’t think Mescal was convincing enough, and he had trouble holding his own against Denzel. Much less able to break out from under the shadow of Crowe/Maximus. I watched the original the night before, and while this one was entertaining, it just doesn’t compare.
Saw Conclave over the weekend. Strong cinematography, great performances. Did not see that little twist at the end coming.Has anyone else seen Conclave? I watched it this weekend and really enjoyed it. I'd say it's a strong Oscar contender for Best Picture and Actor for Fiennes for sure, but possibly also Director, Supporting Actor for Tucci, Supporting Actress for Rossellini, Score, Adapted Screenplay, etc.

Idiocracy is 489 years too late.
Agreed, but that is where it ends, not where it starts. My interpolation of the beginning point seems to be somewhere around . . . 2016? Maybe 2000?Idiocracy is 489 years too late.
I’m a Sean Penn guy despite everything, and even apart from his artistic talents, I think we need people like him around. And of course the Academy are cowards, trying to present themselves as apolitical when the whole world knows Hollywood is anything but…Interesting take by Sean Penn in USA Today:

Except for the time travel stuff, 12 Monkeys look about right in terms of possibility of happening around that time...
My all time favorite movie.
