Scheyer and Duke. He's also finished in the top-3 of the ACC in his first three years. His program definitely seems to improve each year, and currently headed in a great direction. He seeks out advice from other coaches, utilizes analytics (even has an entire team for that), works with a GM, and so on.

Yeah, it definitely is looking like Katan picked a good replacement.

Well, I’m personally glad somebody finally out-analyticed wunderkind Oates…by 20 points.

Yeah, Arkansas is the biggest "Cinderella" left. Guess you can say BYU and Mississippi are outliers as 6 seeds. But no smaller schools are left. I think with NIL the days of the smaller schools making a run in the tournament are over.
I would like to see an chart showing NIL money spent compared to # of tournament wins.

It's looking like you are in luck, that he's going to be out-analyicing lots of folks, or just outright beating them, for years to come.
Pretty much any coach can m the country could and should win big with dook’s talent. It’s pretty much always the best.

How can Duke have so much more talent than UNC? They are that much better at recruiting than UNC? They have that much more money than UNC? How did this things happen? And why do so many people not care to hold anyone accountable? Where does the buck stop?

I think the bottom line is the duke basketball brand is currently a lot more attractive than UNC’s.

It’s not just UNC. They outpace everyone. UK was there with them for a time.

I’m thinking they have always paid better and because they get the best they have a long list of NBA stars to point to and the most popular brand.

The most impressive thing Roy Williams did was break even vs dook even with a distinct talent disadvantage for most of his time at UNC.

Hey remember when Dan Hurley was the most amazing coach in history because he stampeded through the tournament with multiple lottery picks?

And it's not simply that Duke has multiple lottery picks. Among them is a generational talent, the most talented college player since Durant.

Remember, Jerry Tarkanian (nobody's idea of a brilliant coach) also stampeded through an NCAA tournament when he had Larry Johnson.

Duke was one of the first schools to make academics optional for one-and-done players. A lot of players would stop going to class after the season was over, if they were planning on leaving. Duke made it into an official policy. From what I understand, the one and done players weren't going to class in the fall semester either, because they wouldn't be declared academically ineligible until the next summer.

Kentucky had special bb-player dorms with all sorts of treats and privileges. I am not aware of any such dorms at UNC.

These are the things that schools can do to attract talent when all they care about it winning. UNC has never had those kinds of coaches. I suspect Matt Doh cared about little else than winning; too bad he did so little of it.

And yet, with all of that built-in talent, Scheyer is going out and seeking advice from other coaches on what he can do to improve, how he can better coach his players, build his roster, he's employing an analytics team and advisors, working with a GM and scouting team, and so on. He, and they, really seem to be willing to do what it takes to put out a winning product and develop their players to reach their maximum potential.

I know you are a die-hard HD fan and believe he's the right person for this job, but surely even you can see the difference in their two approaches, and surely you can see the difference in their results on the court and in player development.

This "amazing" play at the buzzer from Houston -- wasn't that

Are you trying to say that HD is a better coach than Scheyer or Hurley?

Saying it's because they pay more is such a weak out, and most likely not even true. Given the option of going to a place that has a proven ability to get you to reach your maximum potential vs another place that pays slightly more but won't get you ready for what's to come next, you'd choose the first place.

You are simply foolish to think that Cal only cares about winning. Or to think that Scheyer only cares about winning. And, by the way, you're also foolish to think that some players at UNC didn't stop going to classes in the spring semester of their final year. And, pointing fingers at the academic standards of other schools is tone deaf, given the AFAM scandal. Everyone makes it easier for athletes.
