Defense was stout though. That was ugly basketball.
IIRC, Jordan begged the Bulls to draft Dawkins. They could’ve taken him with the ninth pick but went with Brad Sellers instead…Top 3 picks in the draft were Daugherty, Bias and Washburn. Johnny Dawkins went in the top 10, IIRC.
Mark Price was the first pick of the second round (no. 25 overall back then). Mark Alarie was another first rounder from the ACC (no. 18). NC State’s Nate McMillan was picked in the second round at no. 30 overall (which would be a first round pick in today’s NBA).Hale missed three games. If he got hurt against MD, then he probably missed NCSU, UVa, and Duke -- 2 of which we lost. That's one of the end of season injuries.
The problem with Kevin Madden was that he was never a perimeter player. He was a 6'5" PF essentially.
My memory was that UNC played Three Towers until later in the season when they went to the three guard lineup. That might or might not have coincided with Warren Martin's injury.
But you're right -- the team really lacked a wing player. They had absolutely nobody who could check Len Bias (not that anyone could fully check him), and that was reflected in his performance.
It's worth remembering just how good the ACC was that year. Top 3 picks in the draft were Daugherty, Bias and Washburn. Johnny Dawkins went in the top 10, IIRC. John Salley was a first rounder, I think, and Mark Price was underdrafted -- he became an NBA all star.
Sure, but it was also fun basketball. Athletic and energetic as hell. The most grit and toughness I can recall in a championship game in a long time. Heels would’ve been well served to show a fraction of that kind of fight and scrap that these two did all year, right up through tonight. That was ugly basketball.
Yeah, not sure it was @ugly.” BothDefense was stout though.

Anyone who didn’t enjoy watching that game oughta just hang ‘em up as a college hoops fan.
Very tough teams to officiate, but yeah the inconsistency between halves was glaring. It got away from the refs.4 fouls called in the first half. 26 in the second.
Criminally poor officiating.
the #3 scoring offense in the nation (UF) went up against the #1 scoring defense (UH).Was it?
Or were the offenses bad?
That was a good pick. Sellers at least had the possibility of being good. Dawkins was destined to be a 3rd guard.IIRC, Jordan begged the Bulls to draft Dawkins. They could’ve taken him with the ninth pick but went with Brad Sellers instead
We had just 2 shots in the final 3 minutes after going back up 9 on Saturday. Wild shit.Houston had no shots and 4 turnovers in the final 1:21
The defense was very, very goodWas it?
Or were the offenses bad?
Agree with most of what you wrote, but if we’re sticking to this analogy, there were numerous tape-measure HR’s in the form of *incredible* dunks and blocked shots. It was a highly, highly athletic game. Not a Virginia type of defensive slog.If you like high scoring games and tape-measure shot home runs, this game was not for you.
These teams were flying around, scratching, and clawing for 40 minutes. I didn’t think UF was going to be able to match Houston’s frenetic energy but they did.Agree with most of what you wrote, but if we’re sticking to this analogy, there were numerous tape-measure HR’s in the form of *incredible* dunks and blocked shots. Agree. Too heavyweights going at it. I think everyone would agree that the two best teams were fighting it out in the end. Auburn and Duke were worthy of the final four, but they were not worthy of the final game. And yes, I agree. Definitely not a Virginia-type slow down walk it up bullshit game.Agree with most of what you wrote, but if we’re sticking to this analogy, there were numerous tape-measure HR’s in the form of *incredible* dunks and blocked shots. I guess Jordan, who played against Dawkins for two years in college, saw something you didn't. Hard to say what somebody's destiny would've been had they been paired with Jordan. The real bright side of not drafting Dawkins is that they might not have taken Pippen the next year if they had Dawkins and were looking for a big. As far as Sellers, the only reason anyone even knows his name is b/c he played with Jordan a few years. Dude was 7'0" and averaged 2.7 rpg in his career. Bulls dumped him after 3 seasons...That was a good pick. Sellers at least had the possibility of being good. Dawkins was destined to be a 3rd guard.
