Because Jay and his minions got rid of Butch Davis and kicked Roy Williams in the nuts :(
That was a totally different environment. Unless you are aware of any ongoing issues that Jay and his minions can take advantage of, this seems like needless worrying. In any case, fuck em.

It ain't done till it's done That includes the BOT approving it-and they have not met-as of 10 mins ago meeting not scheduled
The word now is "you never know with Bill"

Belichick is obviously a very accomplished coach, but I'm not sure a 72 year old coach is the right answer.

But if the rumors about what he demanded UNC do to get his services are anywhere close to correct, Carolina Football will be far better off even if he's not terribly great himself.
Yep. So many missing this. He has already made us a serious program.

Some of you are incredibly myopic. Comparing this hire with Bunting is a real laugh.
The only comparison I was making is that Belichick doesn’t currently have a coaching staff that is dependent on him for a job and career.

Hiring a person as head coach who isn’t currently a head coach or a coordinator puts that person farther behind the 8-ball. There is no way that person hits the ground running.

Hiring an NFL guy, especially an unemployed one, as head coach delays putting together a staff…..the NFL regular season ends January 5th……play-offs are the 11th/12th, 18th/19th, etc.

More importantly how is this guy who was a grade a, tier 1 A-hole in the NFL when dealing with men going to interact and deal with teenagers, young men and their families? Plus he's 72. SMH.

This is the take that everyone trying to be edgy and dismiss this as idiotic is completely missing.

I’m also skeptical about his age, lack of college experience, whether or not he still has his “fastball” as a coach, etc., but the fact the hire finally forced the school to put a big time football infrastructure in place makes the gamble more than worth it. That’s always been the core knock on why UNC football will never be great, and the PTB finally addressed it.

First, I have no dog in this fight and don't really care who you hire (neither a unc alum, nor a wolfie/dukie), but...
My understanding (from reading a Reddit thread so easily could be way off) was that there was a power struggle going between the board and the AD with the AD winning round 1 by firing Mack Brown who the board did not wish to jettison. That thread also claimed that Belichick was the board's choice and if he was hired it would be the AD losing round 2.

So educate me, is there a power struggle between the AD and the BOT and who is winning?

Can't imagine it's going to be good for the basketball program, considering the consensus is that they're already far behind other programs with NIL support to players.

Seems like big enough news to merit its own thread and follow the development of staff and recruiting. Will see how it goes, but may eventually lock the existing UNC football thread as a relic of the '24 season/end of Mack Brown 2.0 era

Seems like the chair of the board of trustees single-handedly pushed this through.

It's very simple.

This is the ultimate boom or bust hire.

UNC will be playing in December in Charlotte in the next two years, or this will set the program back decades. There is no middle on this.

I think he's too old to start to build a program. I hope I'm dead-ass wrong.

Odds are its not gonna work, but we have absolutely nothing to lose. Id prefer the young ambitious lower division coach with a minimum income contract stocked full of huge incentives, but im nobody.

Im a lot more concerned with our blue blood basketball program under Hubert Davis.

One nice thing about this situation is the transfer portal. If you've got the dough and the the ability to get guys in the NFL, you can stock up with upperclassmen pretty quick. He has as much NFL credibility as anybody but the big question is going to be how much money the boosters have left after paying for this contract.
