NIL and UNC

So people claiming UNC basketball is in the top are just going off those things?
Essentially, yes. No one can definitely state anything when it comes to NIL and budgets. People make educated guesses, but at the end of the day that is what they are -- guesses.

I mean, it is safe assumption that BYU is spending way more than Wake Forest when it comes to basketball NIL. And people report whisper numbers all the time. But there is no way any site could create a credible list of total player personnel budgets because that information is highly guarded for competitive reasons.

We put all our eggs in the wrong basket?
Perhaps, but I find that difficult to believe because everybody and their sister knew we needed a big starting as soon as our season ended. Portal, HS recruit, whatever... we knew what was needed and had loads of time to find one. And loads of time for more NIL ca$h to be "found" in time to sign somebody.... if indeed what people say is true and we were "top 5" in money bag$. How can you be top 5 and not have any eggs left?

Of course the Hubert haters will say it was all his fault. That the potential bigs didn't want to come play for him at UNC because: "he can't coach his way our of a wet paper bag"; or "he won't let us cuss at practice or in the locker room"; or "UNC never lets their bigs shine, Hubert and his offense is all guard-oriented"; or "Sharpe and Kessler left him, so there must be fire with that smoke"; or whatever aspersions the Hubiehaters like to cast.

So if UNC is indeed top 5 in the Nation with basketball NIL collective, this begs the obvious question: Why did we whiff on getting a big to come last year? It couldn't have been about the money. Correct?
Note: Cue the Hubert haters to come on with their comments in 5, 4, 3...
I don't think they were spending the same last year. There was certainly more money put in the pot for this past season.

Regarding last year team, Sherrell mentioned several times that we out-bid several teams for a few players, all of which ended up taking less money to go to the school they went to. Sherrell has mentioned that UNC does have a "tax," better stated, the purchasing power of the UNC dollar is less than other programs - in the eyes of players and agents. (cjones had been saying this for some time prior to Sherrell mentioning it on the pod.)

Regarding the money this year, Greg has stated that the roster is 14+ million, and he estimates that is top 5, definitely top 10 of all other programs.

Regarding this chart, I'd really like to know how they're coming up with their ranking. How are they factoring in recruiting rankings, portal "magic," and retained athletes.

i'm very much on the fence about HD but i don't know if this UNC "tax" or that "the purchasing power of the UNC dollar is less than at other programs" is exactly fair or correct in all cases, otherwise we wouldn't be getting anyone good or desirable and obviously that isn't the case.

i do think that HD doesn't have as much cachet or belief in some HS/aau/recruiting circles at this point and that cjones is definitely in one of those groups. i haven't been on IC since the site switch so i may not be up to date on the latest but cjones completely switching allegiances within the last 12-18 months or so and going from mostly supporting HD to being a certified HD hater was fascinating to watch. feels like there could be more to that situation than meets the eye.

Until something drastic happens that forces schools to operate with a salary cap or be more transparent about how much money they’re spending to buy players, reports like the one in this article by Matt Norlander and what we see from staff at IC are as close as we can get to estimating NIL spend. These people are credible and well-sourced, but they can’t just produce a stack rank of schools by raw dollar amounts. You have to read between the lines a bit.

I think it’s fair to assume that UNC spends in the very upper echelon for basketball NIL (top 5-10) and probably fringe top 25ish for football.

I think Sherrrell's comments were implying that UNC has to pay more to secure certain players than some other schools do/would. In those situations, the "purchasing power" of the UNC dollar (or experience) is less.

i get what he's implying but my point is that it's obviously not the case as a rule or all of the time and there are also clearly market and value fluctuations with other schools / players.

everyone is relatively overpaying and underpaying for some players. i haven't heard/seen intel that suggests we're overpaying for every player. if HD/UNC are truly that radioactive, HD needs to be gone asap regardless of how this season ends. but again, i have a hard time believing that's the case or else no one very desirable would come even with the higher pay.

Considering the proven players we had coming back, where we are and the improvement we continue to make, it's hard to say we didn't get good value for our money.

I think he was saying/implying that in general, UNC seems to have to pay more than the "market value" for a player to get into the conversation. Of course other factors go into decisions (desire to play for him, the school, etc.) which would lower or raise the offer (against their value), but when looking overall the offer is higher. Having said that, while Rell definitely has his connections and is looped in far more than any/most of us, he's the first to admit that he doesn't know for certain, just what he's been told by folks close to these situations.

I would say for some, if the figures that are floated around are accurate, this is debatable.
