Tesla has had a few deaths that probably could have been avoided if the driver were actually driving.

So rip up a lane or two of every freeway and install rail? And stations somewhere at the interchanges? Love the idea but seems that ship sailed 50+ years ago with the auto lobbying and highway build out. Self driving cars can utilize existing infrastructure.

But I guess buses could utilize existing infrastructure

Why would you need to remove the current freeway? Just raise the train above the center of the highways.
