Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has expanded his authority well beyond the bounds of a traditional health secretary.

Scientists Find Measles Likely To Become Endemic in the US Over Next 20 Years

A new study forecasts more than 850,000 measles cases over the next 25 years if US vaccination rates stay the same. Millions of infections are possible if rates drop.

With vaccination rates among US kindergarteners steadily declining in recent years and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. vowing to reexamine the childhood vaccination schedule, measles and other previously eliminated infectious diseases could become more common. A new analysis published today by epidemiologists at Stanford University attempts to quantify those impacts.

Using a computer model, the authors found that with current state-level vaccination rates, measles could reestablish itself and become consistently present in the United States in the next two decades. Their model predicted this outcome in 83 percent of simulations. If current vaccination rates stay the same, the model estimated that the US could see more than 850,000 cases, 170,000 hospitalizations, and 2,500 deaths over the next 25 years. The results appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“I don’t see this as speculative. It is a modeling exercise, but it’s based on good numbers,” says Jeffrey Griffiths, professor of public health and community medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, who was not involved in the study. “The big point is that measles is very likely to become endemic quickly if we continue in this way.”
 
My neighbor stopped by yesterday-very friendly guy-72 yrs old, worked in Health Care He has no covid vaccination, no flu vaccination, no Shingles-even though his wife had real bad case I asked him if he was afraid of getting "the Autism"...he laughed

How does this testing normally work? Clearly, all milk isn’t routed through a central, federal location before being packaged and shipped to stores, so is there an FDA person at all packaging locations?
 
I suspect dairies are subject to periodic unscheduled inspections similar to OSHA inspections in factories or sanitation inspections in restaurants. It appears the Trump Adminstration believes an honor system is sufficient.
 
I don't know about milk but chicken processing plants used to have federal inspectors on duty all the time. That was in the 50s and 60s (had an older friend who was one) but I don't know about now. I expect that most food production plants do have the equivalent.

But Mr. Kennedy also made clear, as he has in the past, that he believes it is up to individuals to decide. In suggesting vaccines are unsafe, he contradicted decades of advice from public health experts, including leaders of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“I would say that we live in a democracy, and part of the responsibility of being a parent is to do your own research,” the health secretary said, in response to a question from a woman in the audience who asked how he would advise a new parent about vaccine safety. “You research the baby stroller, you research the foods that they’re getting, and you need to research the medicines that they’re taking as well.”

… Mr. Kennedy also suggested, without evidence, that measles shots cause a variety of ailments.

“Does it stop measles?” he asked. “Yeah, but does it also do something else, cause you seizures or cause neurological or autoimmune disease? We don’t know. Nobody can answer that question.”

In fact, studies have shown that, with rare exceptions, people who are vaccinated are less likely than those who suffer infections to develop autoimmune diseases, which has led researchers to conclude that vaccines “have not only the potential to protect the patient from infectious diseases, but also from its complications, including autoimmune manifestations.” …”

“… Mr. Kennedy’s other statements in the interview were also rife with inaccuracies. “New drugs are approved by outside panels, not by the F.D.A. or the C.D.C.,” he declared.

That is false. Outside panels of experts do advise the F.D.A. on controversial or high-profile drug approval decisions, and some panel members have ties to industry that are publicly disclosed before the meetings begin. But the F.D.A. alone has authority to approve or reject new drugs, vaccines and other therapies. The C.D.C. has no role in drug approvals whatsoever.

… Mr. Kennedy also insisted, inaccurately, that vaccines are not evaluated for safety either before or after they are licensed.

“There’s no safety studies at the outset, there’s no surveillance system afterward,” he said, adding, “Vaccines are the only medicine or medical product that is exempt from pre-licensing safety testing.”

In fact, the Food and Drug Administration licenses vaccines after a yearslong process that begins with extensive testing in the lab and in animals and progresses to trials in humans. The F.D.A. requires careful studies of vaccine safety and effectiveness, often with thousands of people in large trials, said Dr. Peter Marks, the agency’s vaccine division chief who was recently forced to resign from his position. …”

Well, we know the “study” is going to say that vaccines cause autism. Now he is saying we will “eliminate” the causes of autism.

That is maybe the most insane thing a cabinet level official has ever said out loud. Amazing how he can have such strong opinions on something and clearly not have the faintest fucking clue how they’re made, tested or regulated.

… The email says representatives from the Department of Homeland Security were padlocking freezers in biosafety-level-4 labs, those with the highest level of biosafety containment used for studying highly dangerous microbes.

Only about a dozen BSL-4 labs exist in North America. These labs work with the viruses that cause Ebola, Lassa fever, and Marburg, types of hemorrhagic fevers. The Integrated Research Facility is one of only a few places in the world that is able to perform medical imaging on animals infected with BSL-4 agents.

“The sacrifice to research is immense,” says Gigi Kwik Gronvall, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, on the closure. “If things are unused for a period of time, it will cost more money to get them ready to be used again.” …”

“… The facility’s director, Connie Schmaljohn, has also been placed on administrative leave, according to the email. Previously, Schmaljohn served as a senior research scientist at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. She has more than 200 research publications, and her work has led to several clinical trials of first-of-their-kind vaccines. Schmaljohn also did not respond to an inquiry from WIRED. …”
