Jean Smart is an interesting choice for host. Not sure the reasoning for her as host of the premiere.

Yeah, I thought it was an odd choice of a relatively low-profile host and a pretty uneven season premier to be honest. The cold open had some good moments (especially from Maya Rudolph) but was too long. Weekend Update was the highlight - in midseason form already - but honestly I thought some of the earlier sketches (usually the best) were disappointing. My favorite sketch was the one where Jean played a romance novelist hired to write word problems for a math textbook; she seemed in her element on that one.

I just watched that one. It was alright. I will say I laughed out loud when the person came into the room and announced that "math scores are through the roof" and Smart's character just smirked.

I like Jean Smart, but she doesn't seem a choice that would convince folks to tune in who otherwise would not. But maybe I'm just not paying attention.

My wife and I loved this part:

Earl opened the car door and his dong hit the driveway. "Wow" Clarissa said, "that thing's gonna kill me." How many tires are on a car?

Moo Deng was awesome. (Bowen Yang is really good at those stupid characters, he makes something more of them than they naturally deserve.)

His Charli XCX was much better than it had any right to be.
