Soooo … is a Civil War brewing in Minneapolis?

This is one hell of an opening sentence —

“Donald Trump’s most profound break with American democracy, evident in his words and actions alike, is his view that the state’s relationship with its citizens is defined not by ideals or rules but rather by expressions of power, at the personal direction of the president.“
 
This is one hell of an opening sentence —

Bad sentence structure, though. Too wordy, and too many interruptions. The point is at the end, after a lot of throat clearing. I think this would be better:

Donald Trump most strongly breaks from tradition by treating states as rival factions, not partners in democracy. His logic of government discards all rules and ideals in favor of a brutal logic: the states must always be subservient and the president must always win.
 


Walz: What side do you want to be on? The side of an all powerful federal government that can kill, injure, menace and kidnap its citizens off the streets or on the side of a nurse at the V.A. who died bearing witness to such government, or the side of a mother whose last words were, I'm not mad at you.
