Years ago Stanford students voted their mascot ought to be The Robber Barons (take that dookies!) but the old folks vetoed that and instead they have The Tree and the color Cardinal (red). The Tree is modeled after El Palo Alto, a 1,000 year old plus 110 foot tall tree in the town of the same name. Stanford does have a tall one in Frenchman Maxime Reynaud who averages 20 ppg and grabs 11 rpg. He also shoots the three (he’s tied for the team lead in shots taken from the distance line) hitting 36%. The team launches 24 treys a game (hitting 8 for an overall of 34%). The backcourt duo provides 14 ppg each and is comprised of #21 Jaylen Blakes (14.5 and 5.2 assists) and #4 Oziyah Sellers (6-5, 14.3). Blakes came to Palo Alto (the city) from Derm, just 8 miles from Chapel Hill and Sellers stepped in from SoCal. That is the bulk of the Tree, er Cardinal’s, firepower with sometimes aggressive Freshman Donavin Young (#2, 4 ppg, 6-8) and #11 Ryan Agarwal (6-6, 7.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.3 apg – he’s a wingman and one of the few Indian-American Division One basketball players at present) filling out the starting line-up. Freshman Aidan Cammann (#52, 6-10, 3 ppg, 3 rpg) sees good minutes along with #10 Chisom Okpara (6-8, 6 ppg) along the frontline while Jr. and 3-year 6-1 tree Benny Gealer spells the backcourt well (#5, 6 ppg, 2 apg). Stanford’s best win is over Santa Clara. In league play they have beaten Virginia, Virginia Tech and Cal (all games played on the Left Coast).
Frontcourt: Jalen Washington is athletic and smart albeit quite subdued. Ven Allen Lubin is even more of that same set of ritmos. Jay’Len Withers has good looks physically and in the ‘want to’ category while James Brown is ready, set, go should he be called upon.
Wings: Ian Jackson Is physically set while Drake Powell Is in Exam-Mode. Cade Tyson joins Powell in the genius club.
Guards: R.J. Davis tops out in all categories while Elliott Cadeau is solid. Seth Trimble is with Powell, Tyson, R.J., Washington, and Lubin in The Thinking Fellers Union this afternoon. Smart guys each and every one.
Overall: Reynaud, while not the tallest Frenchman to visit North Carolina (Think GIANT), will certainly be the most active today and with that he will draw a great deal of attention from the increasingly defensive Heels. Overall, Stanford is bigger than Carolina but so is everyone else. Pressure on the dookie guard and his SoCal mate will be imperative. Blakes averages over 5 assists a game and 2 turnovers (the team averages 10…Carolina 11). Sellers is 6-5 and will make his way to the boards if not checked. Carolina ought to Out Team-Rebound the Tree. Expecting some help from Powell on Reynaud to take him out of the flow and force him away from the key. Unfortunately Reynaud shoots well from the perimeter. If he does today things might get interesting. On the Carolina side – it is time for Davis to match his rhythms and in the main for the Tar Heels to play a smart, fast, together game. The Intel for today points to the Public Ivy outsmarting the Private Pacific Ivy by around 21 points. Las Vegas sez 11.5. Down with the Robber Barons!
