Dude. You know we have similar music tastes, and my enjoyment of Bad Bunny is similar to yours.

But this was a Super Bowl halftime show. What do you expect? I didn't watch it because I know I wouldn't like it, and that's OK because it's not for me. If they crafted it to my taste, it would be hated by the majority of the viewers.

There are many, many artists who produce music that elicits from me the same reaction as Bad Bunny. I'm glad they chose Bad Bunny over all of them, because of what it represents.

Plus, there is no universe in which Bad Bunny is worse than, say, Sabrina Carpenter.

Only if you start from a presumption that all genres are created equal. There are plenty of ways of thinking about music that can answer questions like "is this good or bad music" even without knowing the genre. For instance, if it is derivative of some other music act but lesser in every way, that's bad. See, e.g., Def Leppard and Led Zeppelin. Or if the music is limited by an artificially imposed simplicity, like kids music -- nobody would claim that you need to know the history of nursery rhymes to think that "Mary Had A Little Lamb" isn't really a good song.

There are many other examples. I think pop music generally sucks not just because it lacks originality, but because it makes a point of lacking originality or emotion. That's a valid metric, though likely not universally accepted. And it doesn't apply to all pop music (assuming we even know how to define that). I think that Old Town Road is an interesting piece of music and does what it does quite well.

But yes, "I don't like it, therefore it sucks" is a constant temptation but is analytically invalid.

Good grief, the need for clicks and click bait and perpetual outrage is just absurdly exhausting.

I watched the show, thought it was fine, and think the whole kerfuffle is an example of why people are dumb enough to have elected trump.

"we" are these people and show it all the damn time. Smdh, but not going to get better any time soon

If you simply didn't enjoy the show, no one should say anything. That's simply personal likes and dislikes.

The people I have an issue with are those that didn't even give the show a chance because they are sheep and their cult leader told them it was bad because a brown man sang in Spanish, oh the horror. 😁

If I recall correctly weren’t you involved in some pretty knowledgeable discussions about music origins and death metal on the old boards?

That's a nice thought maybe, but not very realistic given how people consume music.

If I'm on date and decide to play Acherontas in my car (speaking from experience), she's not going to care to trace it back to its punk roots before offering an opinion. She's going to say she hates it. Based on what she's listening to right then, at that moment. Similarly, I took two friends to a Caspian concert once. They'd never listened to the band but tagged along with me. Stood at the back of the venue in misery the entire time. No bother caring to learn about Caspian's influences before telling me the band sucked.

People tend to process music quickly and form an opinion quickly. I don't think that's presumptuous, it's just natural. For most, it's not an intellectual pursuit. We're more likely to research an artist's influences if we like what we hear.

Almost all your criticisms of Country were related to lyrics, but you did mention autotune, which was probably used by Bad Bunny. A co-worker of mine said he saw him live in Puerto Rico in August and thought his vocals were off compared to then, which I'm guessing was an autotune issue with his mic. Then again, Ricky Martin sounded fantastic for his 30 seconds and didn't sound autotuned at all.

In my opinion there's a big difference in saying I don't enjoy someone's music and saying someone is a bad musician.

The first is opinion or taste, it's personal. The second is something that is more than opinion, something that could probably be objectively defended or disproven.

To make an argument that a musician is a bad musician would require a level of knowledge to defend that position.

To say I don't like that artist music requires no defense.

It's interesting that the right gets behind a piece of shit like kid rock and claims he's a wholesome influence, when he clearly isn't. Of course they also claim that trump is a Christian....

I've never actually listened to Bad Bunny before, but I've seen him in interviews and he's a much better person than anyone at that wholesome TPUSA shit show.
 
And regarding the whole, “he’s not American” complaint - gnoring that he is American…..

I didn’t hear these asides complain when U2 or the Rolling Stones performed at halftime.
