Manufacturing: someone's American Dream, just not mine

In fairness, the first question asked if American would be better off if MORE people worked in manufacturing.' Then 25% said they would be better off if they worked in a factory (vs. the 2% those who currently do). And well, 25% is a lot more than 2%.
I thought the US manufacturing work was almost 9%, is this 2% of those that responded?

Manufacturing isn't the win that so many think it is. There's good reason some of those no skill low paying manufacturing jobs went overseas.

There is nothing wrong with good manufacturing and there are ways to encourage manufacturing growth in the US, trump just doesn't know how to do it.

Or you can’t inside trade on it.

Fareed Zakaria -

The U.S. economy is for sale

Complexity breeds corruption, and the tariff system is now tailor-made for both.

“… Even more important, these tariff negotiations will inevitably result in a cascade of corruption. The American economy is being transformed from the leading free market in the world to the leading example of crony capitalism.

… In 2018 and 2019, the Trump administration announced an assortment of tariffs, including 25 percent on steel, and also a program of waivers; they got around 500,000 applications. This week, when asked how he would determine these exemptions, Trump replied, “instinctively.” Studies show that politicians’ instincts usually favor their contributors, which then encourages pervasive corruption.

… In the past few weeks, Vietnam has announced a flurry of measures designed to mollify the Trump administration and get a good trade deal. Among them: approval for Elon Musk’s Starlink to operate in the country and a plan to expedite a Trump Organization project.

In fact, there are at least 19 Trump-branded real estate projects around the world that will be under development while he is president, and possibly many others in the works.

Trump launched his own social media company and his own meme coin; other countries surely see this all as an invitation to invest — and to influence American foreign and economic policy. …

This Washington border county is desperate for Canadians

“There’s just no one around,” said a gas station owner in Whatcom County, where the economy depends on residents of British Columbia remaining eager to buy American.

Ontario collected about $260,000 from the one day an electricity surcharge was in effect on exports to the United States, Energy Minister Stephen Lecce's office said Friday.

Premier Doug Ford announced on March 10 that Ontario was placing a 25-per-cent surcharge on electricity the province sends to 1.5 million homes in three states as one retaliatory measure against tariffs imposed on Canadian goods by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Oooof!
I can do that math… that’s $94,900,000 per year.
That’s a nice chunk of change spread out over just 3 States.

Peter "Green Bay Sweep" Navarro JCD'ing exactly what you would expect

He seemed to talk a good game but only time will tell. Either shelves will get restocked, or they won’t. Either 90 countries in 90 days will solidify a separate “deal” on a per country basis… or they won’t. Grocery prices will either come down like he promised, or they won’t.
Time will tell.
The question is how much time? 90 days?
What will the markets do in the interim? Lose more trillions?

Whatever transpires, trumps promise of “day one” was a lie, just as we thought. He didn’t end the war in Ukraine on day one. He didn’t get a lasting peace in Gaza on day one as promised. Eggs and grocery prices didn’t come down on day one.

Time will tell on his other lies…

Really excellent episode of The Daily this morning featuring a woman whose small business is being absolutely destroyed by the trade policies Pubs claim are intended to help her. She does an excellent job of explaining why Trump's trade war is simply nonsensical. I know Silence is the only one here trying to defend this insanity, but I wish more Pubs would listen to things like this to realize how much pain they're inflicting.

None of them see the ripple effect or they just don't care.

I believe silence is a young person who isn't getting crushed in his investments or impacted by the wake or he would stop simply paroting every lie these people spread.

Even ramrouser and calla know trump and his minions are compulsive liars. I wonder their opinions, since they seem to have disappeared since the tariff bombs 💣 started.

This is another variable in the wake of destruction that so many seem to be missing. Just because the manufacturing isn't in the US doesn't mean that it isn't creating US jobs.

So many episodes of shark tank the entrepreneur talks about the high cost of US manufacturing and how a contract with an overseas manufacturer will help their business. Hmmmm

It's not even so much a ripple effect, though. What's happening is exactly what broad tariffs are designed to do! It's just absurd anyone would think tariffs are good for small businesses or middle class workers. They never have been, and they certainly can't be now in our interdependent, highly automated world. There is no outcome here that is good for the country as a whole. For the robber barons who are propping Trump up, yes, absolutely. But most of MAGA is about to get crushed by a freight train of its own making.

Agree, but i believe the average maga is so ill informed that they never comprehend what could happen and how it would impact the overall supply chain and businesses in the US.

It really shouldn't be that hard to understand if something cost more at the start of the supply chain it will cost more for the other steps in the supply chain.

So many episodes of Shark Tank in the early seasons had entrepreneur saying he was manufacturing in the USA and wanted to continue to do that. The sharks would immediately say you really need to go overseas to lower costs.
