Both sides have moved in the last decade.

Republicans more blue collar, younger and MAGA.

Democrats have morphed into the Democratic Socialist party. August, 2025 Gallop survey shows that Dems now favor socialism over capitalism 66% to 42%.

The debate now is much more courser, crude and rude and both sides contributed to this fact.

Not Rupar’s biggest fan, but man alive, I think he’s got you nailed perfectly with this tweet.

No, im here to tell you that you should get off of social media for your news and away from people like David Frum, Aaron Rupar, etc. that post primarily rhetoric based shit designed to drive followers for their financial gain and get you riled up. In many cases they aren’t professional news people. They are influencers and provocateurs. You would be far less angry and hostile if you ignored their social media posts and just relied on the most unbiased news sources you could find. The level of anger and hatred on the zzl isn’t healthy and is largely driven by social media quotes.
Holy 180 from reality, Batman.

Best i can do for you is "Physician, heal thyself".... good friggin grief that is a twisted take on reality

I am angry because of what I heard Brendan Carr and Donald Trump and Stephen Miller and other immensely powerful people in the federal government say with their own mouths. I watched their lips move when they said it. If you aren't angry about the most powerful people in the federal government using the full weight of the federal government to coerce the silencing of speech they don't like, then you and I fundamentally disagree about what our country is supposed to stand for.
Oh I would be worried about that too when it actually happens.

It's largely driven from politicians in the highest offices of government speaking directly into a microphone everyday

It s happening. It just happened right in front of your face. An FCC commissioner publicly threatened a government reprisal against Disney/ABC if they didn't take Kimmel off the air so they did. It is the most obvious example of the government coercing a third party to suppress disfavored speech that anyone could ever dream up.

What's the problem? Are you waiting for Trump to walk out wearing a cardboard sign that says "I am repressing free speech"?

Great story, but there's nothing conservative about him. He lamented his dad being "MAGA". His "partner" was a male, living as a female, dressed like a dog. He repeatedly explains his actions against Kirk as "hate" motivated. His own mother said he had become more political and liberal over that last year.
It is funny to see all us Olds try to pin down the political blame here (or project it based on our own beliefs and biases).

I would encourage all to look at the Twitter video a fee pages back that explains the world the killer inhabited for years -- his online world. Much like with the Adolescence show, so many young people, especially boys, are wading entirely in that morass of filth that they are warped not by the traditional "right" or "left" but by extremists that exist to be extreme. Kirk swam in that pool, too, just not quite the deep end that this guy inhabited.

In the end, anyone who thinks that "political hate speech" or comments by either side caused this guy to be a murderer will likely just be fooling themselves and buying into the political propaganda that is trying to use you -- so try not to be a "useful idiot" when you can.

Pubs are going to milk to shit out of this. Kirk will have his own meme coin before Halloween.
there were meme coins the day he was killed. I encountered them when trying to find a match for the t-shirt in the suspect photos.

No, not waiting on that and I admit my comment was worded poorly. I think this issue is way more complex than just trump / fcc chair. To me this seems like what lawyers live for. The semantics in play give fcc chair cover. Maybe not enough for you, but JK made it easy.

Aye, that's the rub. Is there any news source that everyone - left, right, up, down - would agree is unbiased? I don't think such a news source exists - although AP, Reuters, etc. come close, or at least I think so.

Are you familiar with SCt precedent on this issue? They literally just issued a decision on this issue last year (and a unanimous one at that).

Not sure what you mean by "JK made it easy." I cannot fathom any possible basis for thinking that there would be any actual FCC authority to punish the statements that were made in any way. And Kimmel's statements specifically were not even close to the most obvious examples of people spreading "fake news" on TV. I bet you can find way worse examples in the last few years even if you restricted yourself only to liberals. We won't even get into the other side.

I'm usually good with Reuters, BBC, AP, and the non-editorial portion of WSJ. The editorial section leans right.

That's a reasonable list that I can agree with.

There is no cover to be found in comments like “we can do this the easy way or the hard way.”
There were no laws broken, rules violated or standards breached. What JK said was only offensive to those desperate to be offended. With no legal basis for revoking licenses, what’s the hard way? What do you think was he implying?

I think JK made it easy because:
1) He lied in his maga comments
2) It is one of the most sensitive times in years and there are a LOT of people being fired for CK comments. He didn't read the room.
3) his ratings weren't good so he made it easy for ABC to use that as an excuse.
4) he made it easy for fcc to use "for the public good" clause in broadcasters licensing as an excuse

He lied in his maga comments
Kimmel said the "Maga gang" was "desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them" and of trying to "score political points from it"

That's not a lie, just an opinion. I think we can agree there are people, both left and right, trying to score political points from it, so that's true. And both sides are trying to characterize Robinson as "anything other than them." So also true, or at least just an opinion. But not a lie.
