I wish so much you could see that you and the people who vote like you are responsible for this.
Both sides have moved in the last decade.

Republicans more blue collar, younger and MAGA.

Democrats have morphed into the Democratic Socialist party. August, 2025 Gallop survey shows that Dems now favor socialism over capitalism 66% to 42%.

The debate now is much more courser, crude and rude and both sides contributed to this fact.

A Pennsylvania man who was stalking a young woman and her family after she didn’t want to continue dating him after a few dates, ambushed and gunned down five police officers in rural Pennsylvania yesterday. The shooter was shot and killed by one of the injured officers.

Three of the officers have died, two are in critical condition. [More info on the Mass Shooting Thread]

This seems like it should get at least as much attention as the Kirk assassination, TBH, but so far it has not.

Here is the FoxNews page right now:

That's an awesome way to fill our ranks with a bunch of boot licking cunts. Yay America!!!
It suggests to me that military recruiting has been difficult, but given that young folks are having a hard time getting into the job market and being employed , I would run this recruiting campaign :

1 ) Scoop up those young folks who can't get a job today and tell them your best bet is to join our big beautiful military

2 ) Begin targeting those high school students who if or will graduate from high school , and let them know there will be no jobs for them so commit to joining our military today, and tell them a high school diploma will be worthless next year.

Right. Polls that count 108% of those polled must be super accurate.

Ram wasn't super precise about the question posed, which was whether the respondent had a positive view of capitalism/socialism. It wasn't a binary, pick-your-favorite choice. So there were some respondents that viewed both capitalism and socialism positively.

Hey @Ramrouser did you know that "the First Amendment prohibits government officials from relying on the threat of invoking legal sanctions and other means of coercion to achieve the suppression of disfavored speech"? Did you know that "Government officials cannot attempt to coerce private parties in order to punish or suppress views that the government disfavors"? How about this: "A government official can share her views freely and criticize particular beliefs, and she can do so forcefully in the hopes of persuading others to follow her lead. In doing so, she can rely on the merits and force of her ideas, the strength of her convictions, and her ability to inspire others. What she cannot do, however, is use the power of the State to punish or suppress disfavored expression."

Any idea what case that's from, ram? Or do you need to get one of the younger folks in the office to help you use Westlaw?
Ram clearly has no interest/ability to answer this. Zoo was close - not quite under the current Presidential administration, but those quotes all appeared in the NRA v. Vullo decision from 2024 decided under the current Supreme Court (which, by the way, was a unanimous decision). I think super separately mentioned that decision in the thread, too.

A king would be on their side pretty much by default, even if not at first. There is no such thing as a liberal king. Absolute power and liberalism/leftism are fundamentally incompatible. If we learned anything from Lenin and the Bolsheviks, it should be that. They started off saying they were being temporary tyrants until they got to the place that they were ready to give the power to the people. Newsflash: that point never came.
Well, I don't want to set up a dictatorship. Germany is proof that you can have a liberal democracy while outlawing fascism.

I understand your point. But the country is never going to accept "reconstruction" unless we have something like the Civil War first. And as I've said many times in other contexts, as bad as things are, I don't think we're close to the point where I'm willing to say that a horrific Civil War is our only way out, both because I simply refuse to accept that the absolute horror of a Civil War is the best we can do, and more importantly because of the fact that the result of that Civil War could, in fact, not be a "victory" for freedom and liberty, but could instead be ushering in world that is far, far worse than the one we live in right this moment, something like a 21st century dark age.
Who is "the country"? I don't care about the MAGAs. Those who try to rule with a boot have no standing to complain when under the boot themselves.

We don't have to have a civil war to do a program of reconstruction.

But anyway, we have no real alternative. It is only going to get worse until we are in totalitarian stage. Now is the time to fight. That gives us a chance (and the Earth a chance too btw). I mean, the Allies could have let Germany take Poland to avoid a horrific war. They didn't. They rightfully didn't.

Well, I recognized what you were citing so I put my argument in those terms.

What power does a "Gallop" poll have?

The idea that Democrats have morphed into the Democratic Socialist party is ridiculous. Identify the socialists for me, please. Obama? Harris? Schumer? Jeffries? Whitmer? Buttigieg? Is there any person who you would deem a socialist who is a plausible candidate for the Dems in 2028? And if so, who and how are they socialist?

By the way, what exactly do you think socialist means?

A significant age gap exists within the Democratic Party. Democrats under 50 are much less likely to view capitalism favorably than those aged 50 and older.

Obama's 2015 Mother Emmanuel was in a different political era.

Trump's strong suit is not expressing empathy towards others so I have little hope his speech will be memorable. I just hope JD and the others rise to the occasion. PLEASE don't turn it into another Wellstone funeral - that's my fear.
What makes you think JD is capable of empathy? When was the last time he showed any empathy at all? Real empathy, not selective manufactured empathy.

Currently the list is relatively small but the clear trend is in that direction.

Greg Caesar
AOC
Rashida Tlaib
Cori Bush
Jamal Bowman
Mamdani
Brandon Johnson
Obviously Bernie

Ask me the same question in 5 years and the list will be MUCH longer.
