The Music Thread

Chet Baker is one of my all time favorites on two levels: trumpeter
AND vocals. The dude was so tasteful, lyrical and on point capturing the mood and feel of every tune he played, or song he sang. And quite often, he’d do both on the same piece.

Like Jimi, Buddy, Janis, Jim, Duane… it’s a long list… Chet left us too soon

I didn’t mean to imply Chet left us as a younger man, like the others, as Chet got his start in the mid-1950’s and passed in 1988…. So he had a much longer life and career than say Jimi, Duane or Ritchie Valens. But it was still a shame he died when he did. Without his addiction he may have lived and played well into the 90’s.

In 1989, I went by the hotel in Amsterdam where he died.

I also “partied” on Jim Morrison’s grave site in Paris in 1985. That was - and probably still is - a “thing”. Smoke some hashish and drink a bottle of red wine with Jim.

The Last Concert occurred two weeks before his death. The concert was suppose to be the beginning of his comeback. His death remains a mystery. The rumor is he committed suicide, but friends believe he was killed resulting from a robbery.

Yeah, I heard suicide, or overdose, or drug deal gone bad, or whatever.
One story I heard while over there was it was less nefarious than all that.
Something about he was “high” / drunk, down in the lobby trying to hook up with a woman. He went back upstairs to his room to get something, found he had locked himself out of his hotel room. The room next door was open so he went in and stepped out onto the balcony, and tried to traverse over to his balcony, lost his balance/grip and fell to his death.
This story makes as much sense as anything.

As you say, he was starting to make a come back, I don’t know of any news about him being suicidal or suffering from depression…. Other than what drug addiction to heroine can do to your emotions and psyche.

I’d like to think he slipped and fell trying a Spider-Man move while drunk/high.

Had the pleasure of seeing Vince Gill sitting by himself on a stool playing an acoustic guitar in Memorial Hall. It was one of the best concerts I had ever seen. If only I could sing like Vince Gill ;)

He can also tear up an electric guitar

This is one that pulls at my heartstrings

Did anyone watch the Rock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony over the weekend? It had some good moments. Dave Matthews did an excellent version of Jimmy Buffett's "A Pirate Over 40." Cool mashup of Tribe Called Quest songs. Jack Black did an awesome intro for Ozzy and then a collection of great musicians including Wolfgang Van Halen and Chad Smith did "Crazy Train." DMB did a mashup of some of their more well known tunes.

I spent many a good night listening to Mike Cross at the Endangered Species and The Cave

Then we almost had to have been there at the same time at some point. I worked the door at the Cave for a lot of those shows. I good friend of mine , Dale White, owned the Species and I went there a lot.

Btw, Dale just died about 6 weeks ago.

Have a feeling 3 of us may have crossed paths in the days of yore.
Sounds a lot like it. There was 2-4 years that I was in the Cave virtually every day. I was a regular on the dart boards, the pool table and most often the bridge table. If you remember a guy who through darts like a baseball, that was me.
