The Music Thread

Been listening to some old stuff. This sort of explains why Southern Culture on the Skids were big Tony Joe White fans.

I enjoy “Christmas music” just fine, but what I really love are “Christmas carols”, which aren’t really the same thing (or more properly, carols are a tiny subset of Christmas music).

I like my Christmas music more traditional and preferably with a massive dose of pagan syncretism, you know, the way Christmas is supposed to be.

My favorite is The Holly and the Ivy.

The holly and the ivy,
now both are full well grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
the holly bears the crown.

Oh, the rising of the sun
and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom
as white as lily flower,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
to be our sweet saviour

Oh, the rising of the sun
and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a berry
as red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
to do poor sinners good.

Oh, the rising of the sun
and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a prickle
as sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
on Christmas Day in the morn.

Oh, the rising of the sun
and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a bark
as bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
for to redeem us all.

Oh, the rising of the sun
and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
sweet singing in the choir.

Haven't been very active in this thread in a while so this could have already been done or maybe it's just a bad idea.

Would anyone be interested in sharing songs that have samples in them and see if anyone can name the sample/samples (no cheating looking them up) and posting links to the songs to compare? Give it a day or two and then the OP of the song can come back and post the sample/samples if they haven't been correctly guessed.

Sorry my favorite brother but I've been day drinking since 7am and have no idea what you posted there. Can you translate that for a soon to be 74 yo like me ?

Love that rap, but my favorite is Polk Salad Annie... very underrated and underappreciated artist.

Maybe make it a stand alone thread?

I have the intention of trying to make a movie club thread, where we can choose a movie, watch, then talk about it. Just haven't had the time lately.

I think your idea is good also, more interactive than just posting songs we like.

Post songs with music samples and see if people can name the sampled music.

Like this

And the music samples in it include

Not sure how many have been exposed to Bluey through kids/grandkids, but it’s a great, very intelligent and heartwarming show. Also legitimately pretty funny. The music has always stood out to me, and this video goes into how both how it’s made (weird instruments!) and the creative philosophy behind it. Maybe a bit different for this thread, but I find this stuff fascinating:

Anybody else here feel like soundtracks are better than the musicals they are pulled from? IMO there's zero comparison to the experience of listening to, for example, Rocky Horror, Jesus Christ Superstar, or Hamilton, compared to watching the musicals. The (preferably with headphones on) experience of just listening to the music and taking in it's full impact without any visual distraction is to me infinitely more satisfying than consuming the music in it's original context of the acted out content, which I find oddly distracting.
