Major flooding in Moore County. 5 to 9 inches of rain has fallen so far.

“Southern Pines Fire & Rescue Chief Mike Cameron urges those in Southern Pines to stay put if you are in a safe location. There is extensive flash flooding throughout Southern Pines and Moore County. Multiple roads are closed.If you are driving and encounter water on the roads,DO NOT CONTINUE!Turn around and return to dry conditions.The Kohls center on Brucewood Road is currently being evacuated due to flooding from a retaining wall failure. A dam in Longleaf country club area has also failed.There are currently two water rescue teams assigned to Southern Pines who have responded to multiple vehicle incidents with stranded drivers.”

Flooding like that is the craziest thing. It doesn’t seem possible. We have a small creek by our house and it’s amazing the amount flooding that can come from that during a heavy rain. A few weeks ago, it flooded a street near me that sits about 20-30 yards away from the creek:

Also took out the railings along the greenway trail right by our house (the water along that stretch rises very high over the trail during periods of heavy rain):

Considering how small that creek is, it’s scary to think of how much damage a big river can do.

You live on or next to a street called Plantation Place? Is this in Charlotte?
 
Sure looks like it. GoogleMap “3200 Westfield Road and Plantation Place” and the Streetview looks just like that signpost (trees and park bench included). The park bench is on the Little Sugar Creek Greenway.

The power of moving water is amazing, especially when it's full of trees, logs, branches, rocks and other debris.

Up in the HIll Country. NWS predicted 3 inches of rain, and they got over a foot. Probably beyond cell towers. The NWS flash flood warning was in the middle of the night only hours before a 20+ foot wall of water hit. 40%+ of the NWS staff in Houston retired, fired. Same for San Antonio, Austin, including. Institutional knowledge would have seen the deadly potential of a warm core storm (they raing massively at night formed from the tropical moisture of EPAC Eurricanes Barry and Erick.

Also, Kerr County had no flood warning system. Multiple level failures at the federal, state, local levels.

That is an incredible rise in such a short period of time. But, OTOH, reports I heard yesterday said this was the biggest flood that river had experienced since 1987. And let me clear, I am pretty sure they were talking about 1987 AD, not 1987 BC. 1987 AD is not some mythical long-ago age that we can scoff at the veracity of the tales coming from that era. Ronald Reagan was President in 1987. So, if there was a bigger flood as recently as 1987, then why were so many youth camp sleeping shelters built so close to the river?

Do you live anywhere near St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church? That place is awesome. One Sunday afternoon after the local PBS station aired a special about it, I drove over to see it and take some photos. Shortly after my arrival, a guy walked over from a neighboring house and I immediately mentioned the PBS special and added that I had no idea something like this was even in Charlotte. He smiled, identified himself as the Treasurer of St. Nektarios, and said, "Would you like to see the inside?" And it is more impressive inside than it is outside.

I used to joke about Sid Meier creating a follow-up to his civilization series called Plantation. I mean, they wouldn't go there, would they? Almost. He made one called Colonization. Sort of jaw-dropping, really.
 
Just came back home from the store at meadowmont and there was a foot and a half of water under the 54 bridge over Raleigh Rd and halfway up the hill a giant oak had fallen but we could navigate under it going left and then right but man what a mess it's going to be in the morning.
 
I think the forecast was a little off. This morning it said the heaviest precip would be along US 1 and justvwestvof there. Seems it ended up further west than forecasted.
 
That’s insane. Yesterday’s forecast for Charlotte was that it would rain all day today and we would get some heavy rain. We didn’t get a drop today, and it was actually pretty nice out. And the temperature didn’t get above 80, which never happens here in July.
