We have solar and a battery. But that is mainly for the well, lights, fridge, etc. No heat....which is fine because, well you can bundle up inside and be ok.
But honestly if it's as much freezing rain as they say, most of the state could be without power for weeks.

My son who lives next door has solar. One of his concerns is how long the panels will be obscured. He has two batteries that he plans to have topped off and getting wood for his fireplace. We'll go there if the power goes out.
 
I had a thought today…I wonder what percentage of generators sold in the South are sold within 3 days of a winter storm?

I was thinking of getting a second battery but they are sooooo expensive. This is our first potential serious outage so I guess we will see how it goes

Sunny days we are golden. Between solar and then battery at night we will be ok. But if it's cloudy .. Ugh. Filling up the main tub just in case so we can flush toilets. It's the one time being on a well sucks

Yeah. They've been discussing getting two more but things are a little unsettled with prices and everything. They wanted to do that in combination with putting more panels on our place.
 
As widespread as this storm is going to be, and as potentially debilitating, it will be very interesting to see how FEMA and the national infrastructure holds up.
 
Can anyone explain what models the Apple weather app uses that it continues to forecast a foot of snow for central NC? It is so far out of alignment with the models and every other forecaster that I'm struggling to understand what it's basing this on. I have colleagues convinced we're getting a big snow because of it and I don't blame them, I blame the app. Where are their predictions coming from?

I was watching a local Charlotte weather forecast last night and they specifically brought up Apple Weather. They said it is completely useless and to ignore it. Not sure what service it uses, or if it uses its own, but pretty irresponsible IMO.

Your colleagues haven’t yet learned that the Apple weather forecast is complete shit?

Three of the worst weather forecasters going - Apple, WUNC Radio, and NPR.***. I’m convinced WUNC and NPR use Apple.

***Local commercial radio weather broadcasts are often the absolute worst; but, their job isn’t to accurately forecast the weather; it’s to hype the coming storm as “the STORM OF THE DECADE/CENTURY” and keep listeners tuned in.
 
Elizabeth Gardner still seems pretty sure its mostly crappy crippling freezing rain in all but the very Northern counties-all the way through the mountains, including Charlotte (which I think is NC not SC)
 
I remember the first time I ever saw freezing rain while growing up in Eastern NC. I had no idea what freezing rain was. I just assumed it was a fancy name for snow. And I liked snow. Snow was fun to play in/with. But freezing rain was all the bad parts of snow, AND MORE, and none of the fun parts of snow. That first time with freezing rain was a MAJOR disappointment in my childhood. My mother tried to console me by saying that how pretty freezing rain made everything. I was all, "I'm a boy, I don't do pretty!"
 
I’ve never heard the term “a thumping of snow” before this storm and I just want to go on record that I’m not a fan.
