Trump refugee ban ‘strands Afghans endangered by US withdrawal’

More than 1,600 people eligible to resettle in the United States are waiting to flee Afghanistan and Pakistan, say advocates

“… The decision has led to panic among prospective Afghan refugees, including family members of hundreds of active-duty service personnel and children waiting to be reunited with family members already in the US, according to a leading refugee resettlement activist and a US official who spoke with the Guardian on condition of anonymity.

Many of those who have applied are in danger and have time-sensitive reasons to leave the country or neighbouring Pakistan because of their past association with the US, they said. After the White House published the executive order on Monday evening, refugees eligible for resettlement will be pulled from manifests for flights leaving the region for the US as of 27 January.
Afghans evacuated by US in chaos of withdrawal are languishing in foreign camps, documents reveal
That leaves one week for advocates of Afghan refugees to lobby for a separate executive order or amendment to exclude them from the ban. …”

It is shameful these folks are still there in any event.
Biden's administration should have done whatever it would take to already have this process completed except for severe outlier cases. It was easily predictable this would happen if/when Trump took office.

He bailed on them the first time why would this be any different. Was probably to busy with his preemptive pardons.

Trump: ‘We don’t need’ Latin America

The president’s comments seem poised to throw cold water on hopes Trump would re-engage partners in the Western Hemisphere.

“… Trump was asked about relations with Latin America and Brazil and said the relationship “should be great.” But he made it clear who needs who more in the relationship.

They need us much more than we need them. We don't need them,” he said. “They need us. Everybody needs us.

Those comments seem poised to deflate hopes of some in Latin America that Trump would refocus resources on shoring up ties with countries in the Americas.

China and Russia have increased their footholds in the region over the past decade, financing major infrastructure projects including deep water ports, and providing more security partnerships for authoritarian states such as Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Those hopes were buoyed by Trump’s pick of newly confirmed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was a key voice on Latin America policy in the Senate. …”

“… Other comments from Trump on Monday seem poised to alienate countries in the region further. Trump repeated false claims about the Panama Canal, hours after threatening once again to retake the canal.

He also threatened to reimpose tariffs on trade partners Canada and Mexico and left the door open to using the U.S. military against Mexican drug cartels. …”

Trump Moves to End Entry Program for Migrants From 4 Nations

The president sought to end a program that allowed migrants fleeing Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti to fly into the United States and remain in the country for up to two years.

“… The program, known as humanitarian parole and introduced by the Biden administration in early 2023, allowed migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela to fly into the United States if they had a financial sponsor and passed security checks. Migrants who entered under the program could stay for up to two years, unless they found other ways to stay long term.

As of late last year, more than 500,000 migrants had entered the country through the initiative.

The program, which Mr. Trump ordered the head of the Department of Homeland Security to end, served as one of two major legal pathways the Biden administration put in place to try to discourage migrants from crossing into the country illegally.

The Trump administration already moved earlier Monday to shut down the other program — a government app that allowed migrants to schedule appointments to enter the country at legal ports of entry. …

… the Biden administration had already said in October that it would allow the permission for migrants from the four countries to lapse after their two years ran out, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to find other methods to stay in the country or face deportation.“

Whatever Musk intended with this salute, the never back down, only double down MAGA approach has been very effective at binding MAGA in a common cause and, whether or not intended, moving the entire group to increasing extremes of behavior and beliefs.

Even if you give Musk the unearned benefit of the doubt here, I hope this doesn’t get turned into a litmus test salute for MAGA to prove their loyalty.

Trump's use of tariffs have been beneficial in some regards. The stated use and the actual use haven't aligned and I suspect they won't this time. Where I disagree with him is in his use of tariffs as a threat, and the first line of negotiating at that. I don't think he will use them as he publicly states. Say what you want about him but he did major in economics at Wharton. I'm not claiming that made him an expert, but he does understand the negative effects indiscriminate use entails. When all is said and done, I don't think we will see tariffs used in a shotgun manner other than with china.
Yeah, he is an economic genius:rolleyes:

I find it interesting that he couldn't get accepted at USC where he wanted to go when he was a rich white male applying to a school that, at the time, was taking about 70% of their applicants but managed to transfer into a school that took less than 30% after a relative called in a personal favor from an ex room mate. I'm sure that bachelor's degree he has was well earned.
