We live in an area with a lot of NOAA, USGS, Fisheries and related scientists. I was talking to a friend last night who's wife works for NOAA. They are totally streesed out. No idea what is likely to happen from one day to the next. Another friends wife works for a nonprofit that supports wetlands management. They have multiple wetlands retoration projects under construction that are largely funded by federal grants, so they have no idea if there will be money to pay the contractors that are in the field doing the work.

Not to say all of these projects are necessary or helpful, but the people that voted for Trump really make no connection to the consequences of cutting funding for all of these departments and projects and the impact on actual working Americans. These cuts ripple through the entire economy. The private sector (energy, pharmaceuticals, tech) uses a tremendous amount of research produced by Federal level scientists. Will the private sector start funding all of that needed research on their own? Maybe?

The contractors doing the field work for the wetlands restoration projects likely voted for Trump without any thought as to how cuts would impact them.

FAFO indeed.

After Walmart, the University of Alabama, UAB - Medicine, Auburn, Feds are the biggest employers in the state of Alabama. There are a million government workers in red states. MAGAts are eating their own hands feeding themselves.

First measles death in 10 years:

Measles has spread to San Angelo, TX from west Texas.

Oh, and Musk "accidentally" fired Ebola prevention workers in Uganda.

But we have saved like 12 million dollars

I’ll be completely honest, and this is not intended to be disrespectful to nycfan, whom I appreciate and admire as a poster, but this board is becoming virtually unreadable and is a whole lot less enjoyable by the passing day to be part of. It actually has nothing to do with politics or ideological disagreement in my opinion, and everything to do with the fact that we have feels like 15 new thread topics started every single day, the overwhelming vast majority of which are by the same poster. There is absolutely no way that we need this many new threads. How many different threads do we need on Elon Musk or Elon Musk adjacent or doge or doge adjacent topics? I haven’t said anything until now but it has become a point of irritation to me recently, but I was more than willing to grin and bear it because overall I enjoy this community and the people in it, but if we are airing grievances on this thread, consider mine aired.
I am going to be mean right now, even for me. But it's 100% necessary.

Listen, we all appreciate you having your come to Jesus moment after voting for Trump like a fucking moron the 1st time. Maybe it was the fact he cheated on all 3 wives, stole from a kid's cancer charity, wants to fuck his daughter, stiffs contractors, or grabs bitches by the pussy. Those of us paying an inkling of attention probably told you what the right thing to do was in 2016, but you just couldn't vote for shrillary, right? You need to self-reflect a lot more. You and people similar to you have a shit ton of culpability in our current situation.

Are you irritated reading too many threads? Are you annoyed having to read in multiple places about how DOGE and elon are destroying humanity? That must really suck for you.

Do you want to know what irritates me? I'll tell you. You wistfully talking about conservatism like it was ever a moral, decent perspective. Like they were ever about small government (they cancel everything non white and non Christian) or fiscal responsibility (they have increased the deficit more than democrats for 40 years). They fuck over the masses, and use religion like a meat cleaver, to benefit the super rich. That's it. That is conservatism.

You hold onto idealistic conservatism like Dexter holding his blood slides. They lied to you. Nothing you think about conservatism is true, or moral, or intelligent.

Since you seem to have turned a new leaf, and are now interested in helping humanity, stop sympathizing with scum like ramrouser, Callatoroy and heelyeah.

Do your fucking part to sincerely make up for being an idiot in 2016, and destroy some fucking rednecks.

I believe in you.

Word is that around one-half of all federal workers at the Social Security Administration are going to be fired/let go. Which will obviously make it far harder for that agency to do its job and ensure that retirees and others on SS get their checks and the other services they need. Again, I thought we were all told that SS wouldn't be touched - how is gutting the agency that provides SS not qualify as an attack on that program? I eagerly await the defenses/excuses from our House Trumpers.

Bunch of Florida Trump voters might want to start puckering their business ends. Or making sure their children really love them.

“… It takes a certain swashbuckling arrogance to propel a startup to glory. But as we’ve repeatedly said, the United States is not a startup. The federal government exists to do all of the things that are definitionally not profitable, that serve the public good rather than protect investor profits.

(The vast majority of startups also fail, something the United States cannot afford to do.)

And if you don’t believe in the public good? You sprint through the ruination. You metastasize from agency to agency, leveling the maximum allowable destruction under the law.

DOGE’s costly, embarrassing mistakes are a byproduct of reckless nihilism; if artificial intelligence can sell you a pizza, of course it can future-proof the General Services Administration.

Worse still, none of this will actually help DOGE make a dent in its purported mission.

What’s efficient about firing people you have to scramble to hire back? What are the cost savings of a few thousand federal employees compared to the F-35 program? What are we even doing here, actually?

There are two possible explanations for this mess. One is that Musk and DOGE have no interest in the government, or efficiency, but do care deeply about the data they can reap from various agencies and revel in privatization for its own sake. The other is that a bunch of purportedly talented coders have indeed responded to a higher civic calling but are out here batting .202. …”

Cao was an awful senate candidate in Virginia this past election, but who knows, maybe he will grow into this job.
