I think there are a handful of Dems that would be running better than Harris right now. Specifically a certain midwestern governor who doesn’t have the Biden admin’s national baggage.
I really doubt it. As long as you have Trump he is always going to have his cult members that support him due to those reasons I stated. There are some Pubs that have refused to vote for Trump again. I don't think that's because of Harris, but because of how awful and incompetent Trump is. No one the Dems could run would be worse than Trump. It's more about those supporting Trump no matter what for those reasons than who the Dems have running. In other words, I don't thnk any Dem would sway those people from voting Trump. Jesus could be the candidate and those folks would still support Trump.

He has more support now than he did in 2016 or 2020, so I don’t think he’s relying on that core of support exclusively anymore. His winning coalition in 2024 would be much different from his coalition in 2016. Trust polling or don’t, but every poll shows softening support for Dems among working class people of all races. I think there are several aspects that go into that, but Kamala having to defend higher grocery prices and rent doesn’t help her.

A Dem governor (Walz or Whitmer would’ve been my first choices if it was up to me) would get a pass on higher prices from low info voters.

Just my opinion, but I think it’s supported by the publicly available data.
I think it is the same core he had then. Just bigger since the last two elections because that core has become even more afraid of losing their privilege just because they are straight, white Christians. It's all based on racism, bigotry and irrational fear.

I do too. Biden, or biden's people, really screwed us by waiting to step down.

If we had had a real primary, I don't think Kamala makes it much past super Tuesday, And we would be running a better politician that would walk away with this.

My point is, if his base was just straight white racist Christians, his coalition would like a lot like 2016 but with less support from the moderate Rs who pulled the lever for him then. But it has shifted since then to include a larger percentage of working class Black people and Latinos.
I would strongly suspect an evangelical Christian influence on that with a side of machismo.

It's not about Harris. There are a lot more people who voted for Trump before who are switching to vote for Harris than people who voted for Biden are switching to vote for Trump. It's more about how Trump is than who the Dems are running.

big gretch?

her time will come. if we still have somewhat free / fair elections in the future. we just barely, sorta have them now thanks to gerrymandering, voter suppression, citizens united, the electoral college, misinformation campaigns, etc. etc.

I mean, that’s how he sees his MAGA cultists.

He's not

What is so aggravating about your post is that only Kamala has a plan to attack the higher grocery prices. Trump talks about his magic tariffs solving it.

The fact that polling shows this race as close is mind blowing and a testament to the power of conservative media.

Trump Tangles With the Journal’s Editors

The former president oscillates between bullying and ingratiation as he tries to influence dictators, would-be immigrants and newspaper editorialists.

“… If this sounds familiar, you probably read the previous Weekend Interview with Mr. Trump, written by my late, great colleague Joseph Rago in November 2015. Then as now, the candidate denounced the Journal publicly a few days before his visit, only to open the meeting by singing our praises. For more than 90 minutes he alternated between bullying bluster and ingratiation. This push-pull wasn’t intimidating at all, but it was curiously disarming. Mr. Trump came across as a human being who craved approval, and that neediness made him—to me at least—more likable than the bombastic celebrity we’d seen on television. …”

Needy wheedlers are generally unlikeable, but to this guy that’s an improvement, apparently.

“…
Mr. Gigot asks how Mr. Trump would persuade Xi Jinping to stand down from a blockade of Taiwan.

“Oh, very easy,” the former president says. “I had a very strong relationship with him. He was actually a really good, I don’t want to say friend—I don’t want to act foolish, ‘he was my friend’—but I got along with him great. He stayed at Mar-a-Lago with me, so we got to know each other great. He’s a very fierce person.”

That visit coincided with the April 2017 U.S. bombing of Syria, where China reportedly had a military presence. Mr. Trump says he decided to tell Mr. Xi about the bombing over dessert: “I said, ‘President, we’ve just shot 58 missiles into Syria to an airport that’s housing a lot of new planes. Your people are not at risk, but they’re on their way right now.’

He hears it and he goes, ‘Repeat.’ . . . I said, ‘You speak English, don’t you?’ ” Until then, the two men had communicated only with the aid of an interpreter.

“I repeated it, and he understood it. He sat like this, he’s a good poker player. First it looked like he was furious, right? I repeated it again. ‘Oh, OK.’ Then we got back to—he was pretty cool. But he’s a fierce guy.”

Mr. Trump returns to Mr. Gigot’s question: “I would say: If you go into Taiwan, I’m sorry to do this, I’m going to tax you”—meaning impose tariffs—“at 150% to 200%.” He might even shut down trade altogether.

Mr. Gigot: “Would you use military force against a blockade on Taiwan?”

Mr. Trump: “I wouldn’t have to, because he respects me and he knows I’m f— crazy.” ..,”

“… I said, ‘Vladimir, if you go after Ukraine, I am going to hit you so hard, you’re not even going to believe it. I’m going to hit you right in the middle of fricking Moscow.’

I said, ‘We’re friends. I don’t want to do it, but I have no choice.’

He goes, ‘No way.’

I said, ‘Way.’

I said, ‘You’re going to be hit so hard, and I’m going to take those f— domes right off your head.’ Because, you know, he lives under the domes.” …”
