I think his campaign's internal polls are showing that he's getting crushed among women voters in most of the key swing states - especially among college-educated and suburban women - and so they're desperately trying to find some way to win them back. But given that Trump is a lifelong misogynist his idea of "appealing" to women is to brag that he'll protect them whether they want it or not, and to give that traditional John Wayne-type macho brag that he'll "take care" of them when he's elected. And of course that's likely just going to turn off even more women, especially those he needs to target and win over.
