Trump seeks $230 million settlement from DoJ

Yes. This seems so obvious to anyone paying attention. It's infuriating that the Dems inside the beltway can't see what is so clear to the rest of the country.
Even if their chances of winning were equal, why would you not go with the candidate who can reliably serve a full term and remain viable for additional terms?

I don't really disagree on Schumer, who as I heard someone (I don't remember who) day, might have been an adequate majority leader but is not a "war-time consigliere" for a minority opposition party.

But, uh, I assume you didn't see this about Graham Platner?

I was talking about Schumer, not Platner. I honestly don't know anything about Platner.

I’d be more concerned about his tattoo and his social media posts from 12-15 yrs ago if he actually espoused any racist/white supremacist ideologies at present.

This strikes me as the Dem circular firing squad in action. We’ve got actual neonazis in office at present, but we’re gonna kill one of own because of a tattoo he got in the service.

I understand that to an extent but if you got a blatant Nazi symbol tattooed on you years ago, realized at some point that it was a blatant Nazi symbol, and never covered it up or anything...you don't see how that makes it a little harder to speak out against the Nazis in power?

Oh OK - no prob. The post you were responding to was criticizing Schumer for pushing Mills into the race instead of getting behind Platner.
Yeah, I was intending to respond to the last sentence, but I definitely could have been clearer about that.

Again, if he had any recent history of antisemitism or racism or white nationalism, yeah…it’d be difficult to disavow.

But digging up stuff from 12-15 yrs ago that is borderline and/or racist-adjacent doesn’t do much for me.

If nothing else, it provides a perfect platform for Platner and Ds to reach out to white men who’ve recently been swayed by the Trumps and Charlie Kirks of the world to show that they can change.

I knew about his reddit posts which he puts in the context of his coming home disillusioned after serving in Iraq. I did not know about his tattoo. Of course all of these concerns are over 12 years in his past, and he asserts he has become a changed man since that time.

But I think it is good that the left critics bring this to light so that he can continue to explain his past and how he has changed from over decade ago .

My hope is that all of the dirt the progressives can dig up will come out before the primaries next Spring because from his birth to today, he needs to be held accountable.

The double standard is now baked in, but it does seem like Pubs should have a hard time criticizing candidates for decisions they made decades ago.

This does need to be fully explored but redemption really is a thing. If our inner thoughts were as visible for as long as a possibly ill thought tattoo we'd all appreciate that a lot more. I probably respect the POV of someone who has challenged and changed his views than some complacent SOB convinced and content with the correctness of his.

The problem with the "change" narrative (which @EyeballKid referenced too) is that he didn't change the tattoo. If he had the tattoo originally, but covered it up a few years ago with something else, I think that would be a great narrative. "Look, when i was younger i got this stupid tattoo because i was 25 and thought it looked cool. When I found out that it was this terrible offensive symbol, I was horrified, and changed it to something else. That's the sort of change people can make when they become educated about something; you don't have to hector them or make them feel bad, it's just a process of getting older and more mature and more knowledgeable."

I think that explanation works very well for, say, the Reddit posts (and Dems will be a lot better off if we stop trying to "cancel" people for dumb tweets, texts, etc from when people were young). It would work well for the tattoo - if he changed it. But how do you find out you have a huge tattoo of a notorious Nazi symbol and just...leave it there???

Everyone fully acknowledges that this is a double standard. It's totally unfair. it's complete bullshit. But the answer is not for Dems to throw all moral considerations completely out the window too.

From what CNN is reporting, Trump hasn't asked for anything yet.

Trump says he ‘could be’ seeking $230 million from his own Justice Department

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he “could be” seeking $230 million from his own Justice Department as compensation for past investigations into him, though he professed to have little knowledge of the specifics and said he would give the money to charity.

“It could be,” Trump responded when asked by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins about a New York Times report that he was seeking the money in connection with complaints he had filed about past DOJ investigations.

“I don’t know about the numbers. I don’t even talk to them about it. All I know is that they would owe me a lot of money. But I’m not looking for money. I’d give it to charity or something,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

Not sure Graham is the best guy to run for the Dem seat in Maine:

In Reddit posts from 2013, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner asked why Black people “don’t tip” and suggested people concerned about being raped shouldn’t be inebriated around people they don’t feel comfortable with.

Those posts, first reported on by the Bangor Daily News, add to previous coverage from CNN and Politico published Thursday about Platner’s writings on the social media site about his ideology and political violence.

The BDN obtained more posts made under Platner’s handle, “P-Hustle,” through an online database. He posted on the social media site more than 1,800 times between 2009 and 2021.

That's what? About one every three days? Would that your posting was as regimented here.

If those same posts were made by a current Republican today, you would be running laps around the board to chastise anyone who critiqued then.
