Trump to take over D.C. Law Enforcement

Unfortunately I don't have a subscription to the Atlantic, but what I could read seems to agree with my position that trump is taking the wrong approach.

My position is not that DC is perfect, I just don't see a federal take over as solving the issue. In my opinion it's only a test of power for trump in his continued pursuit of dictatorial power.
I understand why you feel that way because most of what you consume probably tells you that. But that isn't the case. If he is going to become a dictator then he better hurry up as he has a bunch of work to do to put those pieces in place. You need to have more faith in the American people. Did he take over LA?

The point of the that article is not that what he is doing is right or wrong. Its that the previous 50 year approach by the D's isn't working and something that can have immediate results needs to be done. It's time for action. That is what he is doing. It will be successful in the short term and then when he backs out it will just relapse back to what it is unless people elect different people with different views on crime.

Yes, pardoning J6 felons comes to mind.

I am all for reducing crime, I just don't understand how anyone can get behind this hypocrite, felon, liar, narcissist as the answer.

As with everything it's not the topic, it's his mob boss approach. Which is clear when he pardons felons that agree with him and targets those who don't bow down to him.
Targeting? Like using the IRS to go after conservative groups?

LA is a great example of this being the wrong approach. It wasn't needed and was a waste of money.

If DC is such an issue restore the funding that was cut earlier.

Again, I do not agree with his approach.

My guess that they'll have to plead the sandwich preppie down to a misdemeanor - they'll never bring the felony charge to a DC jury.

If we're discussing "rampant" crime, why wouldn't crime statistics matter?

You are correct that there are other reasons this shouldn't be happening, but the prevailing argument is that crime is our of control in DC, so where's the evidence to support this? And where do we draw the line, can the federal government just take over policing in every city? I thought that the right wanted smaller government, this doesn't seem to align.
Smaller g'ment? Sure. But when things get screwed up to the point locals can't and won't fix the situation, it has to step in and save them from themselves.
Albuquerque is in a state of emergency due to the local leaders (dimocrats) being soft on crime and lack of accountability with juveniles. So the governor (who happens to be a dim also), has decided she has to intervene with the NM National Guard. Will be very interesting to see if she gets the same criticism from the left that trump is getting. My guess is she won't. The left just refuses to hold anyone accountable for crime. That perception is going to be driven home by the right over and over. It won't take much persuading voters either because the see it for themselves.

Oh, I dunno, maybe those pesky stats showing that violent crime is steadily dropping in DC (just confirmed by the White House on your favorite network, Fox News) and to which your response has basically been that you don't care because <something, something> it's still too high in your opinion and Dear Leader's opinion, because as we all know big cities are crime-infested hellholes that can only be saved by sending in the troops. And your only response to a perfectly legitimate question about why, if crime in DC is so bad that Trump needed to act, he didn't do this in his first term has been to basically say that you don't give a damn and maybe I need to write him a letter, which isn't actually debating anything either - it's just ignoring points that are made and using right-wing cliches and stereotypes in response ("Russia, Russia, Russia", seriously?).

Although I did see that Trump's reinforcements in DC did arrest a guy for throwing a Subway sandwich at cops and charge him with a felony, so I'm sure that conservatives are really getting to the bottom of things in DC. Carry on, dude, I'm done with arguing with a guy whose main response to anything I post is to say that you don't give a damn and yell that Trump is "rubbing my ass raw" and "kicking my ass" and so on. What is it with your obsession with that part of the anatomy?
You simply can't grasp how illogical your point is or either you can't articulate it well enough to make sense. It lacks any common sense. You want me to give you an answer to a question that only 5 people on the face of the earth could answer and them claim that the lack of an answer is somehow validates your point. The sheer illogical nature of your argument is rhetorical. Your question wasn't legitimate because the answer to it is unknown, but primarily because it is irrelevant to addressing the issue today.

That's wrong too, but tit for tat isn't a viable approach.

Do you support releasing convicted felons then complaining about crime?
It's kind of droll that Trump pardoned the participants of the biggest crime spree in DC history only to now send in the troops during a declining crime rate.

The only help Trump is going to be is giving some of those criminals jobs. The whole damned administration should probably be on work release.

Would the grand jury indict if the prosecutor made her presentation holding a glass of wine? Hypothetically, of course.

Serious question - is anyone confident in elections moving forward?

Can someone smarter than me (likely everyone here) explain why there won’t be military deployment across the country, and why even if there was, elections would still proceed as normal.
I've said before that there is more than a decent chance that 2024 was last national election in this country.

Anyone want to do the math on this return of investment?

1,650 officers part of DC operation as dozens arrested on Wednesday, White House says, amid Trump’s demand for crime crackdown – live

...

DC police made 74 arrests on Wednesday

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) tells the Guardian that it made a total of 74 arrests across DC on Wednesday 13 August.

They note that this number reflects the number of arrests made until midnight on Thursday. We’re still waiting on an exact number of arrests from federal law enforcement from the White House.

MPD confirmed that a total of 76 arrests were made throughout the day citywide on Tuesday. The department’s data showed they made an average of 56 arrests per day in 2024.

White House says 45 arrests made on Wednesday night

A White House official confirmed to the Guardian that federal law enforcement officers made 45 arrests on Wednesday night in Washington DC. They added that 1,650 officers took part in last night’s operations.

The official added that 29 people arrested were allegedly undocumented immigrants.

They also said that the National Guard are not making arrests at this time, but instead troops deployed to the capital are “providing a safe environment for law enforcement officers to make arrests” and protecting federal buildings and property.

The White House added that operations will now be around the clock, seven days a week – instead of focused on the evening hours.

Law enforcement will also target specific high-crime areas, the White House said, and will focus on “drug dealers, street corners and set-up investigations”. They will also form multi-agency teams to help with this effort.
