Americans are obese and unhealthy not because of artificial processed ingredients in junk food, but because 1. junk food/fast food is significantly cheaper than fresh whole foods, produce, whole grains, etc.; 2. so few of our cities and towns are walkable and instead require automobile transportation anywhere you want to go; 3. Most of America is rural, and most of rural America is a food desert.

I spent 10 days in Italy earlier this year and gorged myself on pasta, wine, and every possible sweet, pastry, and gelato known to Italian mankind every single meal, and not only did I not gain weight, I lost a little bit- because we were walking 15-20,000+ steps daily. The ingredients in our foods are not the problem. It is our sedentary lifestyles, our automobile reliant lifestyles, our desire to buy the cheapest food possible, and also our desire to deport the people who actually harvest our healthiest foods, thus making them even more expensive when there is nobody to pick them and they are withering on the vine or in the field.
The ingredients in a lot of our processed foods are the problem in terms of obesity…….it’s not the food coloring or the preservatives.

So many foods labeled “fat-free” or “low-fat” or “sugar-free” or “low sugar” give people the impression that these are “healthy” or “healthier” choices.

The reality is that fat in food helps satisfy hunger; give people something manipulated to fool your mouth that it’s nice and fatty and people won’t eat 1-2 servings…..they’ll eat 3-5 or the entire container. Same holds true for foods manipulated to taste sweet.

Yes, Americans need more exercise; but, what many Americans eat is a major contributor to obesity.

“You can’t eat just one” is the long-standing Lay’s Potato Chip motto. There are psychological/physiological reasons for that.

What is one serving of Lay’s or Doritos? On a pint of Ben & Jerry’s it used to say, “5 servings.” A 14-ounce “pint” of Haagen-Daz says it’s 2.5 servings……2/3 of a cup is one serving…..400 calories.

I have literally never accused a single Democrat for trying to take away Big Gulps or fast food, so idk what you’re talking about.

I’m more than willing to pay higher prices for healthy foods with fewer preservatives. I can’t think of a more worthwhile thing in the world to pay a premium for than healthy food with real ingredients. That’s critical to the mission of having a country with less obesity, longer lives, less anxiety, etc.
Now you are willing to pay higher prices, even though before one of the main reasons you gave for voting for Trump was your poorer friends and relatives who couldn’t afford the price of groceries?
Are you just making it up as you go along?

Yeah it’s truly mind blowing that the cost of groceries was why we should bring in an administration that will clean up our foods and make them probably more expensive.

In order for fat free food to taste worth a damn, it has to have more added sugar. So they essentially went the complete wrong direction with fat free. Sugar is far more detrimental than fat. Speaking in general, won’t get into the different kinds of fats.

Agree with many on here that a big issue is that the unhealthier food is cheap (and convenient) and healthier foods more expensive. That and portion sizes of unhealthier foods are more like two meals.

To get back on topic, RFK Jr is a disturbing pick. He’s a nut job deluxe.

fauci was a fucking idiot and a liar. I do like experts but I want them to be right and honest. Not making shit up and acting like you can't be honest with the American people.
There is likely nothing you’ve ever done in your life, even brushing your teeth, that you’ve done as well as Anthony Fauci has done science throughout a 50 year career.

Not even close. Get Americans off their fat asses and exercise. That is No. 1 health goal. But we’ve built an entire society around the automobile so “fat” chance anyone gets this country moving like it should.
To be fair, there are a lot of other issues that make it difficult for Americans to exercise as much as they should. Our work culture is one. Economic disparities are another. And environmental issues are another.

There’s a lot of interest at present in the “social determinants of health.” Things like:

—if you live near a park or have sidewalks in your neighborhood, you’re more likely to walk. But poor people and minorities are less likely to live near parks or have sidewalks in their neighborhoods, so they’re less likely to walk. Thus more likely to be obese.

—If you’re poor, you’re unlikely to buy a gym membership or have home gym equipment. If you have a white collar job, your employer is more likely to include a gym membership as a health benefit or have on-site exercise space available.

—for school kids, if you go to a decent school, you’re likely to learn more about proper nutrition and fitness than if you go to a crappy school

For the school kids, the better off kids likely have recess, gym, PE……

Those are often the first to go after Art and Music in poorer schools.

Gaetz is the one bad pick so far to me. Objectively awful pick as AG, no argument there.

I think RFK is high risk high reward in his role. If he focuses on food/nutrition and removing harmful chemicals etc I think he has a chance to make a huge positive impact in that role. If he focuses on being anti vaxx then obviously that will suck. I could see that one going either way but I’m actually optimistic he can Make America Healthy Again. It’s certainly long overdue.
I hope you realize the cutesy pandering to Trump's slogans is really beneath you as an educated individual. You shouldn't do that to yourself. Seriously

Maybe or maybe not. But I don’t form my opinions based on what other people on “my side” might tend to think. I form my own opinions and I think that’s what everyone should do.

Making our foods healthier is a way bigger issue to me than almost every political issue we debate on here all the time, whether it’s guns or abortion or transgenders in sports. But historically it’s never seemed to me like any politicians have ever taken this on as a primary cause. It seems like RFK wants to. I hope he can get it done.

I see your point. But at the same time, maybe some of the "hysteria" you refer to is genuine fear and anxiety about the future. Like, I have a lot of that right now.

My kids are freaking out again today. An 8th grade teacher in the district suddenly died. I have no idea why or what happened, and I doubt it's connected to anything politically. But the climate of fear is pervasive, and given what happened last week, everyone is on edge. This is part of the cruelty that is the point, and I fully expect our troglodyte posters to make fun of my kids for this.

Keep in mind that I live near a university and there are plenty of members of my community who are DACA. One is a parapro at my boys' school and they know her. Another is one of my eldest son't best friends. Everyone is fucking terrified of the jackboots.
I know some of that hysteria is genuine fear and anxiety, and that’s part of my point: there is no point in us putting ourselves through it more than we have to. It will be bad enough if and when bad stuff happens. The time we spend worrying before it happens is just unnecessary pain and stress.

This is very much a do what I say, not what I do thing. I’m just as bad about this. But both for our own sakes and the sake of not burning out others with dire warnings about disaster that may or may not happen, I think we should try to chill over the next couple months.

Looking like Allen Weisselberg going to have to get back in the game! Trump is milking his nominees like Blagojevich! He's got gold baby!
