“… The presidential memo directs federal agencies to investigate and remedy persistent trade deficits and address unfair trade and currency policies by other nations, two longstanding Trump irritants. And it singles out China, Canada and Mexico for scrutiny, directing agencies to assess Beijing’s compliance with its 2020 trade deal with the U.S., as well as the status of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, Trump’s updated North American Free Trade Agreement, which is set for review in 2026.

But the memo doesn’t, in itself, impose any new tariffs—a momentary relief for foreign capitals bracing for Trump to immediately impose stiff levies. Instead, the trade policy memo is an indication of debates still roiling the incoming administrationover how to deliver on Trump’s campaign trail promises for across-the-board tariffs on imports, and higher duties for adversaries such as China.

The Wall Street Journal reviewed a summary of the memo and spoke to Trump’s advisers about it.

A senior Trump policy adviser described the memo as an effort to lay out a vision for Trump’s trade agenda “in a measured way,” suggesting that the incoming president is, at least for now, taking a more deliberative approach to the issue that animated his political campaign. The memo provides a blueprint for further executive action that Trump may take on trade, the adviser said. …”

So the tariff stuff was bullshit What a shock

He's a compulsive liar.

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Nov. 25.

"I will not pardon my son..."

Brosef, there is literally an entire thread on that subject, where many of us who hate Trump and MAGA condemned that action by Biden. And some of us didn't, but the point is, you bringing this up isn't the comparison/whataboutism/tu quoque/two wrongs make a right you believe it to be.
Just reminding that all politicians lie. Plus it's not a lie by Trump until he doesn't do it. He's not even president yet.

Especially since I was probably as harsh on Biden for that as anyone who posts here. The first time our mountaineer friend calls out and criticizes Trump for any of his thousands of overt lies will be the first.

Every politician lies sometimes, heck, every person lies sometimes. That doesn't excuse someone who lies constantly. The number and scale of lying is like the difference between an ant hill and Mount Everest, but Trump lovers have to justify his lies somehow. I still don't understand how they justify his admitted sexual assault of women, though.

Then he's still a liar correct?
He reversed himself and broke his word - so yes, in that way, he lied.

ETA: You would agree though, that "normal politician lying" and seriously maintaining that "Ted Cruz's father was part of the JFK assassination" or that BHO was a Kenyan-born Muslim is a completely different species of liar, would you not? Enigma94 beat me to it.

Some summary of the executive orders, and my comments:

  • Close the border to asylum-seeking migrants and end asylum and birthright citizenship. Illegal. Treaties and statutes very clearly establish asylum and of course we know about birthright citizenship

  • Involve the U.S. military in border security. This would draw immediate legal challenges because of the strict limits in American law for how the armed forces can be deployed inside the country. Illegal
  • Declare migrant crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border to be a national emergency, which would allow Mr. Trump to unilaterally unlock federal funding for border wall construction, without approval from Congress, for stricter enforcement efforts. Illegal.
  • Designate drug cartels as “global terrorists.” Decent idea. Not illegal to my knowledge.

Federal Work Force

  • End remote work policies and order many agencies back to the office 4-5 days a week. Stupid as hell, but probably legal unless there are contractual guarantees.

Gender and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives

  • Establish biological sex definitions for federal workers and as part of revised Title IX guidance to schools Legal
  • Remove protections for transgender people in federal prisons. Illegal under the 8th
  • Remove protections for transgender migrants in U.S. custody. Illegal under many provisions.

Tariffs and Trade

  • Direct federal agencies to begin an investigation into trade practices, including trade deficits, unfair currency practices, counterfeit goods and a special exemption that allows low-value goods to come into the United States tariff free.
  • Assess China’s compliance with a trade deal Mr. Trump signed in 2020, as well as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which Trump signed in 2020 to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
  • Order the government to assess the feasibility of creating an “External Revenue Service” to collect tariffs and duties.

This is all legal.

Energy and the Environment

  • Declare a national energy emergency, which could allow him to unlock powers to speed permitting for pipelines and power plants.. Illegal.

  • Order the federal government to roll back regulations that impede domestic energy production.
  • Signal an intention to loosen the limits on tailpipe pollution and fuel economy standards.
  • Roll back energy-efficiency regulations for dishwashers, shower heads and gas stoves.
  • Open the Alaska wilderness to more oil and gas drilling.
  • Eliminate environmental justice programs across the government, which are aimed at protecting poor communities from excess pollution.

Melania is wearing black, too.

Hmmmm...
Navy according to design details.

She may not be a very nice person, but Melania is a very thin person. She must have pretty thick lining in that coat — for warmth or protection or both?
