North Korean troops experience mass casualties on Ukraine front lines, White House says

North Korean forces are experiencing mass casualties on the front lines of Russia's war against Ukraine, with a thousand of their troops killed or wounded in the last week alone in Russia's Kursk region, White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Friday.
The number far exceeds the figure U.S. officials have previously provided.
"It is clear that Russian and North Korean military leaders are treating these troops as expendable and ordering them on hopeless assaults against Ukrainian defenses," Kirby said, describing the North Korean troops' offensive as "massed, dismounted assaults."

North Korea's mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Russia's U.N. mission declined to comment.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, said North Korean forces had sustained "very significant" losses and were being sent into battle with only minimal protection from the Russian forces.
"We see that neither the Russian military nor their North Korean overseers have any interest in ensuring the survival of these North Koreans," he said.

Little ability to communicate between Russian and Korean forces (not many Russians speak Korean and not many Koreans speak Russian).

I doubt N. Korea has a competent and skilled NCO corps. Ditto for their junior officers.

They are likely being used as they were in the Korean War - mass charged a la the First World War.

Ukraine Forces a Halt to Flow of Natural Gas From Russia to Europe

A transnational pipeline was shut down on Wednesday after Kyiv refused to renew an agreement that allowed for the transit of Russian gas through its territory.

“… The move to suspend the flow of gas through a pipeline that had carried Soviet and then Russian gas to Europe for decades is part of a broader campaign by Ukraine and its Western allies to undermine Moscow’s ability to fund its war effort and to limit the Kremlin’s ability to use energy as leverage in Europe.

“This is a historic event,” Ukraine’s energy minister, Herman Galushchenko, said in a statement. “Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses.”

The pipeline through Ukraine, built in the Soviet era to carry Siberian gas to European markets, is Russia’s last major gas corridor to Europe following the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany, possibly by Ukraine, and the closure of a route through Belarus to Poland.

… While the move could substantially reduce Russia’s revenue from gas sales, it also carries risks for Ukraine. Military analysts said that Moscow could choose to bomb Ukraine’s vast network of pipelines, which it has largely spared from attack over the past three years, now that it has little incentive to leave them unharmed.

Slovakia, one of the European countries that most depends on Russian gas, had also threatened retaliation against Ukraine after Mr. Zelensky had announced plans on Dec. 19 to shut the pipeline.

Because the expiration of the gas transit deal was anticipated and prepared for by European countries, it was not expected to have an immediate effect on prices, analysts said.

The Russian energy giant, Gazprom, issued a statement early on Wednesday confirming that it was no longer sending gas from Siberia through the pipeline. …”

Don't like this guy, but read him and he's been more often right than wrong. Not encouraged about UFA's chances even without the Orange Reprobate coming back into power.

Israel and Ukraine reportedly in talks about transferring trophies seized in Lebanon. Context if you haven't followed the ground war in Lebanon:
Hezbollah chose to retreat with minimal resistance as the IDF advanced into 1-3 lines of villages in Lebanon. There the IDF found massive amounts of well built infrastructure and a substantial amount of weaponry. There was arguably more effort done demolishing infrastructure and retrieving arms than actual fighting. Not all can be transferred but quite a bit available:

  • 6,840 launchers and munitions for RPGs and ATGMs.
  • 9,000 explosive devices.
  • 60,800 communication and electronic devices.
  • 2,250 indirect fire munitions.
  • 2,700 small arms.
  • 2,860 additional pieces of weaponry.
  • 300 observation devices.
  • 60 anti aircraft missiles.
  • 20 vehicles.

Many Ukraine supporters seem to be optimistic that Trump is turning into an Ukraine supporter. They need to wise up on a few things.

Trump's policies are always governed by the highest bidder. So he may be yanking Putin's chain to get the bid up for HIS corrupt purpose.

On the other hand, its possible that Trump no longer fears losing Russian Bot farm support for election and those sort of things.

The interesting thing is how oil prices may play out in support for Ukraine. Trump loves what Saudi Arabia can do for him, both off book and on. Have a feeling they would love for Russia's oil economy to be wrecked which a longer war may do quite well.
