Fit definitely plays a role, I agree, and I don't think Sherrell was implying it doesn't. But, this time around, fit is not as important as coaching ability. It's about getting the best coach possible, without massive baggage of course.I disagree with that ignoring fit and getting the best coach. Using that logic, Golden would be tier 1, ethical concerns aside. Fit always plays a role. That’s not to say it’s more important than coaching, but it’s a major factor. Oats is another fit concern - great coach. Probably not a good fit.
I have a dental appointment this morning so I probably will not start my day drinking until after lunch, but I was fond of Everclear in my younger days. as to my post I remember Frank Beamer gave us a handshake commitment to becoming our football head coach and then went back to VT and leveraged us to get a big raise for himself and his staff plus other bennies.

There’s an always a chance that a new coach is going to be a flop, but that’s a risk that we had to take. Honestly considering the trajectory of the program I think the riskier move would have been not making a change. One of my biggest concerns about a potential quick firing of Coach Davis was "what happens if the coaching search falls flat?" It is not like we can invite him back if we get turned down by all of our top choices. We have to hire someone and it is possible that that someone does a worse job. (The prospect of hiring in the same year that Kentucky and Kansas are hiring is also concerning.
I don't know how these things work, but I hope the powers that be did some planning and assessment (and backchanneling?) of "who can we realistically get?" before making the call.
It seems like a bad coaching search and subsequent bad hire can really create a spiral that can do some serious damage to a program.
BOO TO ALL DENTISTRY
That would be fantastic and I hope it comes to fruition, but I will remain highly skeptical until it does.Without going into two much detail Andrew Jones on 247 made it sound like May, Lloyd, and Donovan are the top choices and all of them have expressed interest in the UNC job - and also that money won't be an issue paying off any buyouts or for NIL going forward
Depends on when the coach’s team gets eliminated. If they get eliminated this weekend I think we’ll have a good idea who it is over the course of the week even if it isn’t finalized/announced until after the title game.So we thinking we probably won't get a new coach until after the national championship game? Unless we get Billy Donovan and he leaves the Bulls before the end of the NBA season
Maybe - but maybe not. It will not mean there's a different job that our targets would have taken.Sure, but if we strike out on a few big names, I think it will say something about how Carolina basketball is viewed by the basketball community.
Scenario 1: we keep Hubert and we know we're in troubleOne of my biggest concerns about a potential quick firing of Coach Davis was "what happens if the coaching search falls flat?" It's hard - I know for us it might be better if Arizona and/or Michigan lose early - but I also don't want dook to win the title - maybe St John's can do us a solidDepends on when the coach’s team gets eliminated. This is where I ended up. It seemed pretty obvious the roster next year likely would not have been as good as what they put together this year. I was willing to give another year had the season ended up a better note, but I think next year would be worse than this year no matter so go ahead and look to the future.Scenario 1: we keep Hubert and we know we're in trouble
Scenario 2: we might get a great coach, or we might be in trouble
Pretty easy call IMO. I understand the downside risk of a coaching search, but keeping Hubert was guaranteed downside.
Yeah, pushing Cal out after a HOF career seemed like a very Kentucky thing to do. I think everyone agreed we needed to move on from Hubert and fully understood the move. Hell, most probably wondered what took us so long…Kentucky was hampered by the fact that Calipari was chased out of town. Don’t think anyone will be discouraged by the fact that we fired Hubert.
I’m confident we will get someone a lot better than Mark Pope. We won’t be able to get whoever we want, but we won’t have to go very far down the list.
Yes, I agree. But, if we strike out on our tier 1 choices (Lloyd, TJO, May, ?) and end up with someone like Byington, while a good coach, I think it says that we're not the top destination we once were (said) to be.Maybe - but maybe not. It will not mean there's a different job that our targets would have taken.
When you have 2 quarterbacks, you don't have one.You gotta be impressed that the first time in over 70 years that Caroilina does an open search for a BB coach, we have 2 ADs lined up.
That’s preparedness even a Boy Scout would appreciate.
I understanding the thinking, but I think that would be an unwarranted conclusion. Like I said, it carries with it an implicit assumption that there is another "top destination" that would have caused our top targets to leave their current job, and we just won't know that. Unless one of our top targets spurns us and takes the KU job, should it come open - that would be a good reason to be depressed about the whole thing.Yes, I agree. But, if we strike out on our tier 1 choices (Lloyd, TJO, May, ?) and end up with someone like Byington, while a good coach, I think it says that we're not the top destination we once were (said) to be.
Here's to this being a moot point.
I don't think everyone felt that way but the 0-3 finish was enough.Yeah, pushing Cal out after a HOF career seemed like a very Kentucky thing to do. I think everyone agreed we needed to move on from Hubert and fully understood the move. Hell, most probably wondered what took us so long…
