UNC Basketball Possible coaches

Just about anybody else would have done the same thing that Lloyd did.
What , take more money, get a PITA AD off his back, not have to move or start a program over? Why would he do that when he could come here and gather around with everybody, sing Kumbaya and live in bliss once just a few small wrinkles get ironed out?

Bullshit.

We’re going for the best coaches available in CBB, that takes time as many of them advance deep into the tournament. There’s no real way to speed up that process unless you forgo those guys as options.

If we wanted a speedy hire, that inherently means choosing from a lower tier option whose team was already out of the tournament early on (or didn’t make the tournament).

If we end up with a coach on the same level as HD or we haven’t named a coach 3 weeks from now, then we can start talking about “no plan in place”. But until one of those things happen, folks should have a bit of patience to see how the process turns out.

IMO, we don’t have enough information, and there hasn’t been enough time, to conclude whether this process has been well planned. But there’s a lot of reasons to be skeptical of the admin doing a good job with it. But you can’t really conclude whether they did a good, or at least reasonable, job until until a new coach is actually hired.

Fair.

Well crap. Of the remaining coaching prospects Lloyd was about as close to a sure thing as we were going to get - he is both a current college coach and a proven winner in the NIL, easy transfer era. Nobody else remaining has his upsides, imo. Donovan is now the most likely choice, but he has a lot more ifs and doubts than Lloyd does - maybe he'll return and be successful right away, but there's reasonable room to be skeptical about that. I'm not saying that we should have kept Hubert, but I do think a lot of people who thought that top-notch candidates (Stevens, Lloyd) would just be lined up to take the UNC job have got be pretty disappointed right now.
Yes.

A sure thing.

Except.

He was NEVER coming to UNC.

Such a SURE thing.

Also, by stringing UNC along just to angle for a pay raise at AZ, Lloyd fucked us because the transfer portal opens next week and our recruits and current players have no reason to stay put. Fuck that guy.
The PTB think they have the perfect solution.

Hence, fire Hubert.

Is Billy Donovan the old fuck solution a la Bill Belichick?

I’m still betting on Sean May as the next head coach at UNC.

These things tend to go very fast once the dominoes start to fall. In an ideal world, we would hire a coach who could bring players with him, like Byington. If you go with a Donovan type, you will need to be active in the portal -- recognizing that a lot of those deals have already been made.

That said, with a big enough budget and a big enough name, you could make up for lost ground quickly.

Moreover, it is better to sacrifice next year to make sure you get the right guy. It is highly unlikely we would win the national championship next year, even with Dusty May. So, make the right hire and build for the long term.
Lee Roberts and Art Pope are in charge. My expectations are Bill Belichick-esque.

It's absolutely true. We let Roy annoint his successor rather than have an honest to God coaching search, and we continue to have to deal with those consequences.
We’re having an honest-to-God coaching search and failing miserably. We failed at it in football in 2024.

When was the last time we had a good revenue sport coaching search?

Roy coming home doesn’t count. Dean Smith brought Roy home.

We suck at coaching searches. We count on alums as cheap hires.
