UNC Basketball Possible coaches

IMO, we don’t have enough information, and there hasn’t been enough time, to conclude whether this process has been well planned. But there’s a lot of reasons to be skeptical of the admin doing a good job with it. But you can’t really conclude whether they did a good, or at least reasonable, job until until a new coach is actually hired.

We may be fortunate based on history made by those who came before but if so that will be the overriding cause.

Fingers crossed that the work of our predecessors can overcome.

I don't understand how they can get good hires for baseball and women's basketball, but can't for football and men's basketball. I know football was a cluster because they went around Bubba to hire Belichick just for buzz and political reasons. There has to be a reason good basketball coaches seem to be avoiding Carolina other than money.

We have gotten good baseball coaches on the cheap because of loyalty. Coach Fox came cheaply from NC Wesleyan for $60,000 annually in 1998. He stayed out of loyalty to his alma mater. Coach Forbes came and stayed because of loyalty to Coach Fox. Coach Forbes could triple his income in the SEC if that's what he wanted to do.

Is there any connection with the women's basketball coach? Or the women's and men's soccer coach? I know the women's field hockey coach was a former player. I wonder if men's basketball coaches are avoiding Carolina because they aren't part of the Carolina family and think that it would be too much negativity to deal with because they aren't. I wouldn't be surprised if they just ended up asking Hubert to come back now.

I certainly don’t think it’s a given that we can’t get good hires for basketball at all. It’s just generally unrealistic to think that you can poach a coach from a major program that is presently in the Final Four when that coach has no prior connection to your program or university. People say NIL makes that nearly impossible, but I think it was nearly impossible prior to NIL as well.

There are a number of very promising coaches that just about any major program would be happy to land, but we haven’t seemed to prioritize them yet, as we have thus far seemed to prioritize the coaches that are nearly impossible to poach from very good jobs and circumstances.

Maybe they can get someone like Byington from Vandy or McCollum from Iowa.

Where is theheel4life with his dumb and dumber gif shit now???

Because it is pretty clear who is the "dumbest" on this board regarding this coaching search...

spoiler alert for peppers :

As I mentioned days ago, this is the brave new world not only with player recruiting and NIL but also in coaching. I suggested that it would be hard to convince 5 star coaches who have built successful programs to uproot their family and assistant coaching staff and move to Chapel Hill to take over a program where the fan base expectation is to win 30 games/year, beat dook** year after year, get to the FF year after year, and win at least 2 national championships.

Just as the UNC brand means nothing to 5 star recruits beyond being focused on making millions in NIL and getting a lottery pick in the NBA, so to does the UNC brand mean nothing to highly successful 5 star coaches beyond how much money it will take for them to give up the successful program they have built and move to Chapel Hill.

As others here have mentioned, IC has been offering a significant discount for subscriptions, so I figured what the hell and got one. Might be somewhat regretting it, but anyway…. LOTS of panic on the basketball board over there. And it seems most of the posters over there prefer Nate Oats over anyone who is presently on the coaching search board (with the possible exception of May), and are very upset the university is not pursuing him.

As we move away from the heavyweights and toward either a Belichick hire or a Tier 3 one, the men in the latter category will likely review fan base history along with all the other factors.

That would seem to me to mean that it is either Donovan as an interim Coach or a very cocky younger man who is either a Diamond in the Rough or just cocky. Whichever it is knows they are far from first choice for anyone associated with Carolina.

I’m at a loss in imagining who or what type of Coach could be hired without a faction already prepared not to like him and that will he poised to never be satisfied. Even with immediate success the impatience potential is high.

Can enough if our fan base stand up for a new Coach - Tier 3 - to hold at bay the haters (at least for the 5 or so years it might take to establish an acceptable pattern of coaching success?).

Fuck Nate Oates.

See how it works?
