UNC Basketball Possible coaches

Maybe. But too many people had soured on him I think.

That’s one of the things that I’m getting at that any coach considering this job worth their salt is likely to take into consideration.

“Am I getting myself into a situation where I just can’t win?”

The narrative of the entirety of UNC Basketball fortunes - on court and off - is likely to reduce our applicant pool.

We’d do well to understand this about the situation as well as how we, the fan base, come off in such a review.

As an Arizona fan, I wasn't exactly excited about hiring the head coach of Xavier. I thought Arizona was better than that. Miller ended up being a pretty damn good selection.

Recently, I wasn't exactly excited about firing Miller and hiring an assistant from Gonzaga...but here we are, in a world where an assistant from a mid-major conference is the most pursued coach in CBB.

There are no "right" way to go about a coaching search and no "right" path success.

The Carolina fan base isn't crazier than any other high P4 base and we look absolutely sane compared to UK and some others.

Coaches know that when you earn millions a year to lead a program, high expectations come with it. The fan expectations at Carolina won't cause any remotely decent coach to even blink.

That's why it's next to impossible to pry an established well paid coach from their current position.

Have to spin the wheel on a less decorated guy or go the Donovan route.

Hubert was in-house spin of the wheel himself.

HD was near the top of the ACC and in national contention 3 of 5 seasons.

I’m no math wiz but…
I guess people may have different definitions of being in national contention. I would define it as having a realistic chance of winning a national championship (understanding that on rare occasions there can be surprising NCAAT runs). I would say the Hubert was in national contention 2 of 5 seasons, and in the first instance, it didn’t appear he was in national contention until after winning the Sweet 16.

There was only one season under Hubert where, going into the tournament, I thought we had a legitimate shot of winning a championship. That was 2024, and even then I felt we had almost no room for error and would need a few breaks here and there.

The "less decorated guy" is always good for me
But I assume today the NIL funders demand potential instant gratification
Donors have always been important-today they practically run the show

With the amount of money involved to bring in new players and transfers it was a certainty that once this new system settled into place that donors and boosters would play a larger role than ever in influencing college athletic departments in the P5 conferences.

Hope you're right.

correct, you are no math wiz if you think we were in national contention 3 of 5. if you count pre-season #1 rankings, then maybe 2 of 5.
Actually I think he may have been counting the preseason #1 ranking as one of his "3". 1) Final game appearance 2) Preseason #1 - sort of like how d00k counts their national contention viability year to year - and finally 3) #1 seed in the NCAAT .

We all know #2 was a fallacy... but for that one hot minute - just before we fell out of the top 25, shortly after the season started - one could "say" we were in contention nationally.

So let's call it 2 out of 5 plus 3 or 4 games in the 3rd one

It's been talked about to death, but it was really a mediocre season with a great run at the end of the season, an awful season, the best overall regular season with a loss to a lower seed in the Sweet 16, another awful season, and a mediocre season.

I would take a look at the assistants for top college coaches. Many of the successful coaches were assistants for accomplished coaches (Dean, Roy). Certainly not guaranteed, but worthwhile.

CURRENT NAMES:
Mark Byington (Cremins)
Billy Donovan (Pitino)
Ben McCollum (---)

NO LONGER AVAILABLE:
Otzelberger (McDermott, Hoiberg)
Tommy Lloyd (Mark Few)
Dusty May (Knight + other)

Dan Hurley is an exception as far as I can see, never having been an assistant.

I would take a look at Hurley's assistants among others.

Mentioning anyone or anything associated with Hurley blows my mind. We hire anyone from that UCONN program and I am OUT on Carolina basketball.
