UNC Basketball Possible coaches

While the waiting i frustrating IC has stated the goal is to make the right hire, even if it bleeds into the portal opening. I think that's the right approach but there will be more pressure to get it right. Ideally this gets wrapped up early next week and we can focus on the portal.

Sure, there'll likely be a short honeymoon period but from what I've witnessed over the past 5 years I don't expect that to last very long at all.

I think the new coach will get a season or 2 to show what he can do before anyone really comes for him (maybe that's what you mean by "short honeymoon period").

And, really - with the portal - evaluating a coach as of season 3 seems a pretty realistic timeline in today's college basketball world.

Obviously I'm among those less than encouraged with the way my alma mater has been conducting itself across the board for some time now. I dearly love Carolina -- attended or taught there for more years than probably 99% of folks ever to graduate -- and find Chapel Hill to actually be The Southern Part of Heaven -- but I'm also cognizant of the massive effort given to the full ruination of Carolina in every way possible by outsiders that has been going on.

I get that the top top players get grabbed up quickly but let's say we get a really good coach - for sake of argument let's say its Billy Donovan - we'd still have plenty of time to grab enough decent players to be competitive next season - especially in a crappy ACC

You're correct.

The downside is that some kids are determining right now where they are going to attend and making unofficial commitments and Carolina doesn't have anyone really participating in that process.

So we're likely missing out on some kids with this wait, but we're hopefully making up for it by getting a good quality coach.

I agree. As I said in a previous post, people just don’t know how to be patient with regard to receiving information anymore. Because we have constant access to information outlets and constant access to discussions about the info we are waiting on, we expect instant gratification rather than realistic timelines.

But I do understand why the existence of the portal (and its timeline) leads to some panic nowadays.

The BB fiasco is fresh in everyone's mind.

You can also choose from what's available. The best available coach might not be all that.

I'm skeptical about the 'rally around' possibility. It isn't normal for everyone to be satisfied even in the best situation (save the Return of Roy I suppose) but we are pretty clearly a very fractured fan base right now. Sure, there'll likely be a short honeymoon period but from what I've witnessed over the past 5 years I don't expect that to last very long at all.

My opinion wasn't important about keeping a coach so I'm not offering it about getting a coach. I think I'm going to stay as neutral as possible..

I hope the fan base doesn't regret this for the same reason I said that I hoped Trump didn't lose the Senate at midterms right after his election. I didn't want us to be in that bad a shape. That SOB might just pull it off. I'd as soon we not try.

We have 6 national championships, what's the odds that any particular season is one of the "better seasons"?

But I agree that having reasonable expectations for a coach in his first season who will be hired after the portal opens is likely a good idea.

McCollum or Byington would be great hires.

Oldas shared on IC that Stevens was in contact (might have even said he initiated it) with UNC before the VCU game. Said that the Stevens family were the ones that basically put the brakes on it.

Can't blame them. Stevens is making big money and has a far less stressful job managing the Celtics organization, and likely has far more time to spend with his family than he would as a college head basketball coach. I doubt he'll ever return to college coaching, or coaching period.

I expect the "Hirers" will be relieved at the cover that not hiring by portal opening day gives them. Like I said, I don't trust anyone in administration at present. We've been infiltrated and are staffed by people who care nothing about Carolina past what it means for their own fortune.

I don't mean to pick on you or anyone else but this strikes me as ironic(?)...So competitive is what we're after then?

This is true but it’s also true that there is no legacy by being an NBA executive. Everyone should prioritize what’s important to them and maybe for Stevens it’s simply making the most money with the least stress and having as much time to spend with his family as possible, and there is nothing wrong with that. But he has the opportunity to pursue a more enduring place in basketball history if he wanted that.

Unfortunately it's happening everywhere, and especially in red or purple states. Indiana's state government just announced this past week that they're eliminating or merging 580 degree programs across all public universities in the state. They've created a formula for all undergraduate and graduate degree programs in terms of enrollment numbers, and if a program doesn't meet those numbers it's either gone or consolidated. And most of the majors affected are in the humanities and liberal arts. Just a very dark time for the humanities almost everywhere.

I really think this only would apply if Donovan is the hire. If we hire someone like Byington or McCollum, the late hiring would be offset by the likelihood that some of their current players would follow them.

I understand this perspective and share it in some respects, but I also think it's too negative. The people in charge have every incentive to hire someone who will be successful at UNC. They might have different reasons for wanting that than us (i.e., financial or legacy-based versus emotional investment), and different things they're wiling to accept to get there, but the incentives align with respect to hiring someone who will be successful.

We are in agreement. As I said there is nothing wrong with prioritizing your family and a stress free job.
