"On merit" is fine for 7-7 but ignores the OL and dearth of receivers. You think Baker would bring along a different OL and Eric Ebron? BB probably didn't want his rookies decapitated.it could be, but given the available information, i find it significantly less likely than the other explanations put forward. For 2/3 of the season, Gio Lopez was one of the 5 worst starting quarterbacks in P4 and maybe FBS football. I find it hard to believe that on merit, we had three worse options on our bench, and that calls everything else about that pecking order into question.
Gio had better pff, passer rating and qbr than Max (while they ran for their lives), so I assume you'd have Gio ahead of Max on the pecking order?
ETA: our QB play and O were shockingly horrible. You'd think almost anyone would've been better than Gio aside for the game he outplayed Mensah for 77% 2 TDs and 200 yards. But I just don't believe BB would handcuff himself further given all the other rookies he let play. Eidan started and played a bunch at first despite being very raw... Ditto for a bunch of rookies.
