God, we are a clown show.

Surprisingly, the Rubio/Tillis/Berger part doesn't really bother me. I mean, it's unusual, but Belichick is an unusual candidate. It doesn't sound like they had much to do with the hiring beyond passing along that Belichick was interested in the job.

Preyer is a fucking idiot, but we already knew that. We'll be better off when his (and Jennifer Lloyd's) term ends in a couple of years. He acted outside the bounds of his position, made an offer to Belichick we couldn't fulfill, drove off nearly every other realistic candidate we had, and gave Belichick all of the leverage in negotiating with us. If Roberts hadn't been able to pull this out, we would have looked like fools and nearly all of it would have been Preyer's fault.

And that's before we even get into the fact that Cunningham is a great AD and I'll be shocked if he doesn't get out of Chapel Hill within the next couple of years.
Preyer acted out of line, but he also got us Bill. I am not sure we wouldn't have ended up with Tommy Rees under Bubba.

And I am still mad at Bubba over the whole Tez situation. Jen going around Bubba and getting independent counsel is actually what got the NCAA to reverse course. Bubba would have been fine sacrificing Tez (and who knows how the Miami game would have turned out that year without Tez) in order to protect the incompetence of UNC compliance.

And let's not even get into Bubba's ridiculous navy ban. I personally think Bubba is a very corporate, inside-the-box kind of thinker, and that is not going to do much to advance UNC to the places it needs to go. Farethewell to Notre Dame Mr. Cunningham.

We'd have only ended up with Tommy Rees after Preyer got involved and drove off every other good applicant. I would bet that without Preyer's involvement we would have ended up with a better coach than Tommy Rees (although not necessarily Bill Belichick).

I get the frustration over the Tez situation. The thing is that independent counsel was the right path after the NCAA turned down our appeals and that's not something that Bubba can necessarily arrange. Schools should play nice with the NCAA while encouraging the player to take the proper steps to engage the court system. I don't like the navy ban, but I don't think it's a major issue, either.

On the whole, Bubba is a great AD. We're not NC State, we don't need an AD that chases every trend and runs after every stupid idea someone proposes. We're a well-respected entity which will largely do well playing within the current system. While we need proactive vision, we'll do quite well without tilting at every windmill that comes along.

Who says we’ll be better off when Preyer and Jennifer Lloyd’s terms expire?

That presumes the UNC Board of Governors and the General Assembly will select better people.

The Bill Belichick College Football Coaching Experiment Begins

The legendary NFL figure opens his first North Carolina spring practice this week with familiar NFL overtones.

Pat Forde

“… Start with the numberless, nameless players. There were no identifying characteristics for any of the Tar Heels, other than defensive players in white jerseys, offensive players in light blue and quarterbacks in red. This is something Belichick did while he was winning Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, until the NFL made him at least apply numbers to all his players; here, nobody is going to tell Belichick how to do anything.

Belichick was asked how he’s “gone about explaining” the no-number approach to his players. His answer: “It hasn’t been a lot of explanation.”

Translation: We put those jerseys in their lockers and that’s what they’re wearing. We don’t need to explain it. We’re not playing FeelingsBall here.

“That’s just what we do,” Belichick continued. “We go out there and we earn it. So the numbers and the names and all, that’s not as important as doing your job and being responsible and accountable to your teammates and being a good teammate. And so it’s not all about individual notoriety right now. I don’t think that’s important at this time of year. I think it’s more important to just go out there and practice well and improve every day.” …”

I guess we should bump this for the spring portal.

Beau Atkinson has entered the portal. (Which is super disappointing to me.) He's gonna be hard to replace.

And our transfer QB Ryan Browne has re-entered the portal after spring practice. I'm not sure he ever really unpacked.

We're expecting another portal QB to commit soon, but we still have a thin QB room.

Yea
Tough two transfers

Story on Belichick's girlfriend's role with the program. I found this part very interesting. Is she talking about the IC football board?

"Is there anyone monitoring the UNC Football page for slanderous commentary and subsequently deleting it/blocking users that are harassing BB in the comments?” she asked on February 13. The next day, Belichick wrote this: “I cannot believe that UNC would support my being called a ‘predator.’” (Looks like the Chapel Hill honeymoon ended in roughly two months.)

Some spin masters on IC say not to worry, Beau isn’t that good. Also, Bill and Lombardi knew we needed a QB and settled on the kid from Purdue. Well, he apparently sucked so bad we moved on and decided to look for something in the spring portal. Hope the kid from South Alabama we are hoping to get is the real deal.

no - the girlfriend is definitely referring to commentary on social media.

Going to be a tiresome media talking point but it’s such an easy clickbait thing for media personalities to use.

And cant forget a lot of the media still holds a grudge against Belichick for Patriots success and deflategate conspiracy.

Beau is a good pass rusher but had minimal impact stopping the run. It’s why an average DE like Evans started over him. imo we’ll find a way to get more pressure on QB this year but interior dline and stopping the run is more a concern.
As far as Browne, the coaching staff was always going to bring in another QB in this round of the portal. Think he just saw writing on the wall that Baker would take his spot at some point whether that being back up or starting spot.
Also I cringe hearing all the win predictions on IC this far out because you really don’t know what the roster will be till fall camp.

Just don’t think there were a lot of options outside of Belichick, period. A lot of coaches saw that Mack couldn’t get appropriate NIL funding and thought if he can’t do it how will I be able to? Belichick is really the only coach who could convince UNC to commit to football financially imo. Also Mack overstayed his welcome by a year which didn’t help.
