Idk guys, like most fans I find the whole relationship bizarre and don’t love the negative news headlines, but I’m still in the camp that we’re going to have to see how the season plays out before declaring this to be anything more than off-season tabloid chatter.

If the team really struggles next season and we get a bunch of stories coming out that Belichick is half-assing the job, then yeah all of the stuff coming out now can be confirmed as major red flags in hindsight. Right now though I still don’t see any evidence that he isn’t taking the job seriously, which at the end of the day is all that matters to me. The program was in need of a major personnel overhaul, and while all of these TMZ articles are swirling about how Belichick had an awkward interview on CBS or whatever, the staff has quietly been very busy rebuilding the roster. Last time I checked they actually have a top 10 portal class (of course transfer portal rankings are very fickle, but still).
I think you're right. I think this is a very good take on the whole situation.

My on-field concern about Belichick is that I don't feel that we've upgraded the roster nearly enough to be good *this* season, and I'm concerned that we don't have many seasons altogether for which Bill is going to be our coach. We're ranked #9 in the transfer portal rankings based on quantity but I think I saw that we are in the 20's or so when ranking based on quality. That's not bad, of course, but it's not great and I don't think it's what anyone expects who hired and pays Belichick $10 million a year. Now, granted, it's only the first offseason. Of course we have to give it time to see how it shakes out in the next year or two.

I'm skeptical of what next season will bring. I was not a real fan of the hire at first but I was brought around that it could be a success. I'm back to being pessimistic for a couple of reasons. The biggest is that this is UNC football. If we can find a way to step on our dick we will. The other is that we will have brought something like 60 new players with the portal and incoming freshmen. There are question marks at QB, OL, and DL, the three most important positions in my opinion. I do think the coaching will be better, especially starting with the man in charge. But I think a lot of fans are in for a rude awakening on September 1st when we play TCU.

Completely agree with this, word for word. In fact, you did a way better job at much more succinctly summarizing my thoughts than I ever could. Teach me your ways of brevity!

I think it is entirely justifiable for fans to feel excitement, because after all, UNC just hired the literal greatest football coach in the history of the sport. But my concern is that people are excited because they think we are getting 2001-2018 Bill Belichick, and my view is that we are not. (Obviously, I hope to be 100% wrong). If we were getting 2001-2018 Bill Belichick, it would be the most grand slam of all grand slam hires in the history of college sport, IMO. But there's a reason that 2024 Bill Belichick wasn't on the radar of a single other college or NFL team with a need for a coach. There's a reason that 2023 Bill Belichick was fired. There's a reason that 2020-2023 Belichick lost a ton off his fastball, and then only the Atlanta Falcons gave him a token interview for a head coaching job. There's a reason that non-Tom Brady-having Bill Belichick is like 20 games below .500 for his career.

If we somehow get 2001-2018 Bill Belihick to make a reappearance, then we are the luckiest fanbase in the history of fanbases and I eagerly look forward to celebrating a UNC football national title with y'all one day!

Looks like it’s Bill’s word versus that of CBS. Hard to imagine that CBS would have concocted this whole saga out of nowhere and for no reason, but it’s water under the bridge at this point either way. It has been a bad look for Bill, a bad look for Hudson, and a bad look for UNC- and two of those three things need not happen again if we are paying him $10 million to represent our university, and the third *shouldn’t* happen but ultimately it’s something over which UNC does not have control.

Also, and I can speak with a particular bit of expertise on this very specific part, but the fact that the statement from Bill came from UNC’s University Comms office- not from the Football program, not from Bill himself, and not from the athletics department – is an indicator that it’s being addressed and dealt with at the very highest level of the university, most likely because there are some powerful and influential people at UNC who are not happy with what’s been going on.

If what the university wrote in that press release is true, then CBS was in the wrong and it should be dealt with at a high level because what a preposterous turn of events.

Lol. Circlesky88 says “it’s UNC football, we’ll find a way to step on our dicks”, and right on cue we get this.

“Hey guys we know everyone saw the interview a few days ago where the psychotic girlfriend clearly wanted to control the narrative, but we want to set the record straight that what everyone saw happen, didn’t actually happen”. How fucking stupid do you have to be to make an official statement about something like this? If they just ignore it, another story comes along and everyone forgets about this in a few days. Such an unnecessary PR blunder.

UNC had better hope that Belichick and Hudson's version of what happened is 100% what happened, because according to TMZ, sources at CBS said that there was a ton of unflattering footage that they (mercifully, I presume) cut out from the interview in an effort to spare Belichick. If I'm CBS, and I'm getting my journalistic integrity called into question publicly like this, that footage that didn't make it to the Sunday morning show is going to make itself available soon.

I cannot imagine CBS having an interview with Bill Belichick and agreeing to "solely focus on the contents of the book." I believe they agreed the book would be the focus of the interview, but I do not believe any reasonable journalistic entity agreed that all other topics were off limits. Then it's no longer an interview, just a promotional appearance.

That was my first thought, as well. A guilty dog barks the loudest. A hit dog hollers. Things of that nature.

Right!

Oh, and also, he referred to Hudson as his "creative muse" in the book, and the interview was supposedly about his book, so.........why would the very benign question of "hey, how did y'all meet" be so offensive?

Thought experiment: how will you react if UNC football sucks this year? As in, noticeably worse in performance and record than 2024?

If you don’t want CBS to ask about your relationship, don’t have your girlfriend in the room during the interview.

Hire a professional publicist/PR person. One you’re not having sex with. Have them keep the interview on topic.

Generally, fuck Darren Rovell but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes. - Note from Edward Everett to Abraham Lincoln following the Gettysburg Address
