Would be basically a “meets expectations” season based on where we stand today. But yes, grand scheme for UNC football historically, “par” pretty much sucks.

Anything 8 wins or more is a great year 1 with this roster. 9+ and I’ll be over the moon.

Expecting 7.

Meets expectations ain't enough for the kind of investment demanded and received. Someone wants us to pay through the nose and suffer through the circus, they need to win big. Right away. This is not the era of "give them time" and he is certainly not the coach to be given time. Win right fucking now. That should be the expectation. Anything less is for pussies.
 
The problem with us winning 6, 7, or even 8 games this year, IMO, is that next year the schedule gets a lot tougher- TCU in Dublin, @Clemson, Notre Dame, Miami, and Louisville. We are already essentially on borrowed time with Belichick before he coaches game 1. I don't think we can afford to go like 6-6/7-5/8-4 and then similar in 2026, and expect to have any program momentum whatsoever. If that happens, the narrative will be just be that UNC was chasing press conference and ESPN talk show wins, not wins on the field.

For me, Belichick’s age and overall pedigree means there’s only one year where I don’t sweat the W/L record too much: year 1.

Anything less than 9 or 10 wins in years 2 and beyond isn’t good enough. But I simply don’t think we have a roster where we can “expect” 9 or 10 this year. It could happen if a lot goes our way. But it’s certainly not the most likely outcome.

As CFord notes, the schedule in year 2 is harder than year 1. But I’ll still have higher expectations about how to define success in year 2 than I will year 1, despite the tougher schedule on paper.

If we beat TCU, things could fall into place in year 1. Not many games on the schedule yarder than that one. Clemson and maybe @ NCSU?

I have no strong feelings about NCSU. I'll bet you could sort of our fanbase geographically, to some degree, by measuring which rivals they hate. Duke was always the #1 rival for me and nobody else was even close. I didn't have any state fans around me growing up.

Haha yep that’s absolutely true. I grew up around nothing but State fans and then went to school at UNC during our 0-5 stretch against them in football which also coincided with the NCAA investigation saga.

I will say that my disdain for State extends only to the fanbase. I’ve got a great deal of appreciation for the university itself and for what it means to the state of NC, especially the agricultural and veterinarian aspects.
 
Duke has always been my top rival but their football has been so pitiful for so long that I just don't care about it. I always want to beat state waaaaaay more than duke when it comes to football.

Yeah, if you’re an in-state person and/or a football-first fan, you probably hate State the most.

If you’re out-of-state or basketball-first, more likely you hate Duke the most.

As a native born North Carolinian who loves all UNC sports but gun to my head would rank them football, baseball, basketball in that order…..I hate State way more.

Well at least we could consistently go 1-1 against that group in football. Who else we would ever beat is a mystery to me.

We will end up in the SEC and we will get embarrassed big time. The biggest will be in basketball because our program isnt in the same stratosphere competitively now with the top of that league.

Im not saying I dont support the move but its going to be VERY ugly for a long while.

Basketball will probably do fine in the SEC once the resource gap is evened out.

Baseball should do just fine. Again, if anything the move to the SEC will likely make us a better team (due to increased resources), partially offset by tougher competition.

Football will have some serious work to do to avoid getting embarrassed. But is 4-8 (2-6) against an SEC schedule really any more embarrassing than the 6-6 (4-4) we sometimes post against a shitty ACC schedule? UNC football has routinely embarrassed itself for my entire lifetime.
 
Just want to reiterate again that Mack left the cupboard extremely bare for his successor. Given the circumstances I think the new staff did a decent job trying to fill in all of the gaps using the transfer portal, but you never really know how it’s going to turn out when you’re using the portal to rebuild a roster basically from scratch.

Either way I think the baseline record to feel good about the Belichick experiment moving forward is probably 8-4. Even considering that he inherited a dearth of roster talent, it would still feel like a disappointment if he can’t figure out a way to scratch together more than 7 wins (against what appears to be an extremely weak schedule) considering the money going into the program now. Of course a lot of this will depend on how good or bad our opponents actually end up being.

E: not trying to build in excuses for Belichick if we flop this season. Just pointing out that even the best coaches with a ton of resources can struggle in year 1 when they’re facing a big roster overhaul.
