Just want to reiterate again that Mack left the cupboard extremely bare for his successor. Given the circumstances I think the new staff did a decent job trying to fill in all of the gaps using the transfer portal, but you never really know how it’s going to turn out when you’re using the portal to rebuild a roster basically from scratch.

Either way I think the baseline record to feel good about the Belichick experiment moving forward is probably 8-4. Even considering that he inherited a dearth of roster talent, it would still feel like a disappointment if he can’t figure out a way to scratch together more than 7 wins (against what appears to be an extremely weak schedule) considering the money going into the program now. Of course a lot of this will depend on how good or bad our opponents actually end up being.

E: not trying to build in excuses for Belichick if we flop this season. Just pointing out that even the best coaches with a ton of resources can struggle in year 1 when they’re facing a big roster overhaul.

Mostly agree with this. Our enemies will fail to account for the roster he took over, but it can’t be completely overlooked in year 1.

8+ wins in year 1 and we are cooking with gasoline heading into 2026.

Did notice one thing unusual about our schedule. We start out with a home game. The second game is on the road. We alternate the entire season between home and away games. There’s no string of say 2-3 home games or two straight road games. Can’t remember the last time that happened.

What I find odd is we have 2 bye weeks and there is only 1 game played between those two off weeks.

I have no strong feelings about NCSU. I'll bet you could sort of our fanbase geographically, to some degree, by measuring which rivals they hate. Duke was always the #1 rival for me and nobody else was even close. I didn't have any state fans around me growing up.
Not sure it’s geographical.

Good chance it’s era. Also, basketball or football-centric.

Long-term, if UNC doesn’t move to a P2 conference soon (1-2 years, maybe 3), UNC will be in Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Maryland, Rutgers, middling purgatory.

Football parking passes arrived via FedEx today.

As to the Duke vs NCSU discussion, fuck NC State. Fuck them now and forevermore. Fuck them when they bass fish and fuck them when they kiss their mamas. I only know Duke exists 2 days of the year. I hate NC State from the moment I wake up until the moment I lay my head.

Roy and I are of an accord on this one.

Agree with this. I will be ecstatic to see a disciplined football team with a competent coaching staff on the sidelines

UNC needs a minimum 8 win season this year to keep the momentum going forward. A TCU victory on Labor Day evening, with ESPN's A team present, with the entire football world watching, would be a cannon shot for our football program.

We usually come up short in these type of games but we're about to find out

Dang, was out of town yesterday and nothing came today. Hopefully soon and no issues with delivery.

In Taylor V’s IC interview with Lombardi we learn that they’ve ordered 1980 (stair step) throwback unis to honor LT. They hope to have them ready for a game this season. Great news!

I don't get the interest in fball uniforms. I guess it's a teeny bit "fun" when fball or bball teams put on some throwback, but it falls into a category of "oh neat" category for me, rather than something i actually care about. Fball pageantry and stuff seems pretty unique compared to other sports.

So what is the sweet spot of good enough to keep momentum going but not so good that Bill leaves for an SEC job? 8-10 wins?

lol. Not one single solitary NFL team nor any other college team besides North Carolina wanted to hire Bill Belichick, so I can assure you no SEC team is going to have any interest in doing so no matter how many games we win. We are all hoping this works out well for UNC, and it very well may, but unless or until it does, every single team in the NFL and every other major college team is laughing at the fact that we fired one 74-year-old has-been whom nobody wanted when we hired him, to hire another 74 year-old has-been who, you guessed it, nobody else wanted either. Maybe it will work out this time! We’ve got about $10 million reasons it better work.

You are being very, very naive if you think Bill Belichick wouldn't be the hottest name in coaching in December 2025 if he led UNC to 11 wins and/or a playoff spot. Every team in the SEC/Big10 with an opening would be getting out the big guns to hire him away. A performance like that at UNC would open huge eyes, and he would be on national TV every week with huge ratings if that actually happened.

But I put the odds of that at under 5%.
