Ooooof. That’s gonna leave a mark.
There are an awful lot of schools that would have hired a six time Superbowl champion as their coach, and they wouldn't have asked too many questions on who he was going to hire on his staff during the negotiations. It's not working out so far but it's just such a crapshoot. Plenty of schools get their coaches choices wrong and they are much more of a gamble than Bill Belichick. Really need to see if he can do anything in the portal this year but if he has another roster like this or worse, it will be time to let him go.

I’ll trade you for Brent Key - straight up.

Ehh, idk about that. I could be wrong (I usually am!). But not one single other NFL team wanted him. That leads to me to believe that no actual serious college football school would’ve wanted him either. I have no doubt that some slaptastic lower level G5 school would have wanted him, but I truly don’t think any P4 school with actual serious aspirations to be successful in big-time college football would have hired a 73 year old who had never spent a single solitary second coaching college football in his life. I truly think that only UNC- a program long known to value style over substance- would be a Power 4 school brazen and foolish enough to take such a massive gamble, essentially leveraging the entire athletic department’s short to medium term future financially.

I disagree that this is not working out so far because college coaching is a crapshoot. It not working out because college football coaching is a crapshoot would have been a plausible excuse had, say, Jon Sumrall or Matt Campbell or Glenn Schumann (especially Schumann) been hired. This is not working out so far because it was always very, very obvious that it was not going to work out from the moment that it happened. College football is far to chaotic, far too Wild West these days for a serious Football school to take such a massive gamble on hiring someone who had literally never stepped foot for a single second on a college football sideline as a coach. A guy like Nick Saban- who utterly dominated the entire sport for a decade and a half- walked away from it all because it was far too chaotic anymore and that guy has forgotten, relearned, and forgotten again more about college football than Bill could ever learn. (And vice versa with Bill having forgotten more about coaching NFL football than Nick could ever learn).

I think that far too many people got blinded by the six Super Bowl rings and assumed that winning so prolifically at the highest level of the sport would automatically translate to being able to do it at the penultimate level of the sport. But quite literally the only way that this could have worked out is if Bill would have gone out and hired an actual college football coach coaching staff with actual college football coaches who had actually coached college football, recruited college football, schemed and game planned college football, motivated college football players, etc. And from the moment that he did the exact opposite, it was pretty clear from my vantage point as to how this was going to go. Certainly that’s not to say that it has to continue going this way – he could certainly put aside the ego and pride and clean house on his staff and get rid of his GM and go out and get some guys who have actually done this before. This thing could probably get turned around in a decent hurry if he would do that. But there is nothing in his personality or his history that suggests he’s going to do that.

The guy has been amazing but he wasn't even our first choice. We were hoping to get the head coach from Tulane and the Georgia Tech job couldn't lure him away. Tulane. We were also trying to hire Deon but he decided to go to Colorado.

Brent Key was the assistant head coach on a team who was circling the toilet bowl although he became interim head coach when they fired the last guy and had a nice little end of the season. That won him the job after the guys we really wanted said no.

It's just crazy how these schools are spending millions of dollars and it just seems like there's no real science to it.

Plenty of schools make the wrong choice but not many pay the kind of money for their mistakes that UNC is paying Belichick.

Yet another topic you don’t know one damned thing about...

It is almost a guarantee that that guy has never played competitive organized sports, because nobody with a fraction of an ounce of competitive spirit in them would say something so outlandishly whiny. In my opinion, of course!
Has never played competitive organized sports recently. He could be like 75 yo. Lost whatever fire he had.

But if he has never played competitive sports, so what? He can't be a fan of the team? I would say the issue is an overall wussiness/whininess. I just don't see it as so extraordinarily egregious as you do.

I don't know; I've seen a lot of dumbassery on the sports boards. You probably weren't there for Mikeness. Or clevel's "the play." Or the freaking idiot who in Gut's second or final year kept typing ad nauseum, "LAME DUCK GUT MUST GO!" About a thousand times. He was like OGtruthhurts here, except orders of magnitude more prolific.

There was a guy, DMX I think was his name something like that, who tried to brag about how sophisticated he was. Except, you know, he wasn't. He did regale everyone with wondrous stories of drinking Brie in Paris, and eating Pinot Gris (which he thought was pate) in the country side.

There was a website called Duke Basketball Report, which in its early days was a trip. Imagine your stereotype of 1999 computer literate Dukies trying to talk about sports, and then quintuple the cringe. Someone over there actually wrote a long paean to the greatness of Coach K, as exemplified by him calling his post players Shav and Shel. You see, in basketball, you have to make decisions quickly. If you need help on defense, you don't have waste on extra syllables like "den." Holes might say Brendan, but Dukies say Shel and that's why Duke was a superior team and Coack K a genius. I kid you not.

There was also the guy who wrote a long passionate defense of Shavlik Randolph's mom cutting his steak. Talk about embarrassing -- N&O ran a picture of Shav as a high school junior (at the time, the #1 rated recruit in the country) sitting on the sofa while his mom cut his steak. We figured it was a prank by the N&O guy, or maybe mom was being overprotective, or maybe someone made a bad judgment call -- but no, what we didn't realize was that Shav was trying to put on weight and thus it was fabulous that he wasn't burning calories on extraneous activities like cutting his meat.

This shit wasn't ironic -- internet irony didn't really exist yet. Well, it did but it was still underground. Point is, I guess I've just seen so, so much worse than that.

im sure another school would have given him a chance at 2-3 million a yr, but only desperate dumbass unc would give him 10 million and another 10 million per yr for staff and gm.

Noticed this myself last night and this morning. What a petty sack of shit we have coaching our football program. This is arguably more unforgivable to me than the absolute godawful garbage product that he is putting onto the field this season. It’s not an oversight, look at all the other pro players that the UNC Football Twitter account posts about on NFL gamedays. They were slobbering over Javonte Williams and Omarion Hampton (and rightfully so – they should!). But not a peep about Drake Maye having an extraordinary game on the big stage of Sunday Night Football against the best team in the NFL- simply because he plays for the New England Patriots and because Bill can’t get over that they fired him.

again, this will go down as the worst hire in all of college football. the sooner it is over the better because no way this is going to work out for unc....no fuckin way at all.

I’ve been either a fan or affiliated with the University of North Carolina football program for 25 years now. I’ve got varsity letters from the program and have been a (menial) contributor to the program ever since I graduated, even when I barely had two nickels to rub together or enough money to put in the gas tank to get to work right out of college. I’ve sat through 25 years of mostly bad football, terrible losses, etc. But I’ve never been more disappointed in UNC Football than I am right now for reasons that really don’t have anything to do with wins and losses. This entire program should feel nothing but shame and humiliation for having such a thin-skinned, petty, insecure asshole leading it.
