I think you're right about Lombardi, but didn't Kraft force BB to get rid of him? (I think I read that somewhere.) Yeah, hopefully the portal proves to be greatly beneficial. Really need a good QB.
I can’t quite remember but I think that is true that Kraft did step in and force Bill to fire Lombardi. I would love to be wrong, but I don’t see anyone in the PTB’s at UNC having the same ability to do so. I have to imagine that Bill essentially forced them to agree to give him the keys to the kingdom carte blanche. We shall see. Hopefully he proves us all (or at least me) wrong and pulls together a great team for next year. I know we all want that!

Why can’t we try one or both of the freshman qbs to see how they perform with live bullets? We need to see what we’ve got before heading to the portal. I’m watching Mizzu’s freshman QB. We saw Cal with a frosh.

We’re trying new faces at every other position.
We had 3 quarters of mop-up time vs Clemson, Gio was injured and still neither freshman took a single snap.

The problem with putting in either freshman against Clemson is that, if they're not 100% ready, Clemson has enough talent that they might overwhelm that player and set back their development.

I'm typically a "you don't start playing for next season until you're eliminated from a bowl game" kinda guy. I do think that we might see the freshman get some burn toward the end of the year, although I'd prefer that the Wake, State, and dook games aren't blowouts where we empty the bench (as I don't see us blowing any of those teams out).

Crap on BB all you want, but we’d be 4-3 and 2-2 in conference right now if our players didn’t forget how to play football inside the 2 yard line.
This type of logic at least gives me a good laugh when I’m doing post mortem after another brutal loss.

Yeah if Belichick didn’t put together a roster full of guys that can’t score to save their lives and turns the ball over all the time, he’d be undefeated!

Completely agree. I would also say a new GM but I am also realistic enough to know he won’t do that. Hell, he might not even change OC’s but agree with you that that has to be the absolute bare minimum. The problem is, I’m not sure that we aren’t running the exact kind of offense Bill wants to run so I’m not certain he sees an issue with the coaching and playcalling and game planning on the offensive side of the ball.
Yeah that’s one of the biggest reasons why Belichick will never work here. His entire approach is predicated on playing a bullshit ball control style of football that only works in college if you have like 2021 UGA or 2023 Michigan levels of roster talent.

Even if he wanted to change things up on the offensive side of the ball (and I’m far from thinking that’s the case at this point), no good college OC will want to work under him.

“Hey, I know we just went 2-10 and that I’m 74 and probably not going to make it past this season, but do you want to uproot your career to call plays for a lame duck coach in the worst P4 conference?”.

And PS we're graduating all OL starters.

Coaching the worst team in the worst P4 conference.

That being said, and as much as I still do not believe that this whole Belichick thing is going to work in the grand scheme, I can admit that I now see reason to give year 2 when I absolutely saw zero reason to do so after the Clemson game. It is going to require us to strike gold – I mean absolutely strike gold – in the transfer portal and especially at the quarterback position, and I most definitely believe the jury is still out on Lombardi and Belichick’s ability to put together a good collegiate roster, but at least as of right this moment – and certainly I reserve the right to change my mind after seeing the rest of the season play out – but as of right now they should get year two. And I’ll certainly be hoping it works out well.
I think this is nuts. What we know will happen eventually needs to be done immediately. Keeping him another year is simply delaying the inevitable. By the time he and Lombardi figure this out Bill will need a walker on the sideline.

Sure the team, especially the defense, looks better. I would expect a team to improve over the course of a season so I don’t think the improvement is some great achievement. Let’s rip that bandaid off already. We all know it’s going to happen eventually anyway.

He already has a walker on the sideline...of the street variety.

Yeah, you’re probably right. I’m just resigned to him getting another year because I know how feckless UNC’s leadership and shot-callers are.

The UNC Powers-that-Be have invested themselves financially and in terms of their reputations and pride and egos in Belichick being successful, and I agree that they're not going to let it end when the season is over, as to do so would be an admission that they had screwed up big time. And given the team's recent improved play (at least on defense) there are enough signs of improvement that they'll almost certainly give him another year no matter what the final record is this year.
