Since we’ve talked previously on this thread about what kind of NIL money we may be offering certain recruits versus our competitors, there was an interesting tidbit in the scoop Don Callahan posted this evening on IC. A four star prospect who is currently committed to an SEC school is rumored to be planning to flip to UNC on Wednesday, and Don’s reporting is that multiple sources say that UNC is offering this particular prospect a much larger NIL package — one the team to which the prospect is currently committed does not plan to match. It lends credence to my belief that we are attracting a sizable number of this 40-man high school class with more lucrative NIL offers than they are receiving elsewhere. Not that there is anything wrong with that by any means – good for the players and good for UNC for doing it. But I have a hunch that there is a decent number of folks in this class for whom that is true, and for whom UNC beat other P4 offers that did not feel the need to match.

Trying to understand the point here.
Is it that we are over-paying recruits?
Is it an effort to diminish what appears to be a major recruiting win, what some are saying will be the plum of a very solid class?
A little of both?

I also wonder how multiple sources that IC would have would know what Texas is offering.
The player, Btw, is vodney Cleveland, DT, ranked no. 252 player at all positions by rivals.

I think the point is discussing the class and how it is being assembled. If NIL package is the deciding factor for many in the class, then that is something to weigh in evaluating how this staff is recruiting vs how another staff might recruit.

Ok. Maybe the poster can weigh in. I ask bc during the game he kept talking about and mocking those folks who seem excited about recruiting using all caps often to make his point. Even offered an apology. Seemed strange.
I am glad we are doing what everyone is doing and that is anteing up. Also the team rankings and assigned NIL value, although no one really seems to understand it, at least suggests we are paying a lot less.

We'll know pretty soon if BB/Lombardi are having to overpay recruits to get them to come to UNC, as they won't have enough money left over to fill out the needs through the portal. (UNC is not spending near the same amount of money that many of the other top 25 programs are, or at least they didn't last year.) If they are having to overpay then it is not good, assuming that they must continue to overpay. Sherrell talked about the basketball team having to overpay due to the belief among recruits and agents that players are not developed under HD. I believe the reason that there's been a (few) missing pieces in roster construction lately is because of simply running out of money due to having to spend more than other schools on a player.

I asked questions on premium what nil value means. Hoping to get insight. We are at $35k. Close to bottom of top 25, with most over $100k and even $200k. But I have no idea what it means and I highly doubt it's accurate.

Yeah, I don't either. And, who knows if those numbers are even remotely close to accurate, from team to team. I think a better measure will be if BB/Lombardi can land impactful players from the portal. If they can't, given they're signing a lot of high-rated HS recruits, then I'd say the reason is because they don't have the money left over. (I am fully acknowledging that this viewpoint is probably not a very good one, I just don't really know any better.)

I don't either. I just found strange CFord post and the point. I hope we are being competitive in trying to land impact playersbeven if that means paying more. Mack did not have the money and there are a myriad of reasons for our horrible season but lack of talent is in mix. We need to fix that.

I definitely agree, we need talent, and a lot of it. I do think if they're having to overpay then it can be a problem. CFord is really good about coming back and explaining/answering questions of his posts, so I'm sure he'll be back to clarify.

Huge positives to build upon:
- With no bowl game we have plenty of time to determine our portal needs and go tampering. Lombo probably convinced BB to throw the last few games just for this reason, like losing games to get that #1 pick in the draft. Brilliance.

- We have a ton of long FGs on film to show our kicker recruits

- Newkirk's 97.3 QBR for the game shows the strength of our ability to develop QBs.

- We held Hollywood Smothers to just 2.7 YPC - this staff proved they can shutdown one of the acc's best RB and FORCE ncsu to beat us left-handed.

- The staff showed that an unshifty strong safety can be our main pun returner the entire season and that just proves they are out of box thinkers.

Those On3 NIL values are completely worthless. Do not put any stock in them. They are based on a hypothetical value of what a player is worth. It is not based on any actual money being paid.
