Yeah, that first sentence is a totally fair point. But I do think you're right, there definitely seems to be something "off" more so than what would be expected to be normal.

My biggest problem with Lombardi is that he's objectively awful at his job and always has been. It would be different if he was some arrogant blowhard who had a litany of past successes to which he could point as evidence that his methods are sound. But the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots couldn't wait to kick him to the curb (the latter necessitating the owner to step in and tell Belichick that Lombardi was getting the boot), and then not one single solitary other franchise or team at any level of the sport would touch him with a ten-foot pole for well more than a decade until Belichick hired him to be our GM.

The crazy thing is, as much as I've been a very vocal critic of the Belichick hire since it was even first rumored on IC last December, I actually think that it's by no means out of the realm of possibility for Belichiick to work out "fine" here at UNC. His problem isn't that he doesn't know how to coach football anymore, but rather that he lets his arrogance, hubris, and bizarre obsession with surrounding himself with nepo gopher boys, family members, and 'yes men' undermine all of the other football expertise he brings to the table. If Belichick fails here, and it's looking more and more probable with each passing day, almost the entire reason why will be because of Michael Lombardi. It can't believe Bill is willing to have his football legacy tarnished here at the end of his career by some loser like that.
Taken a bit further, and perhaps I'm deluded, but I still think Belichick can coach football, and his sons are competent at coaching football, but his insistence that he surround himself with multiple Lombardis is going to torpedo any chance he has of success.

Your guy provide any more insight in Shipp and his plans?
Didn't ask about Jordan. My take on him has always been based on his mother who is a former student of mine and social media friend. Marie indicated a distinct level of unhappiness for most of the season. I don't think that really changed so I don't know what he will do. I know they are Heels to their core but my read was always that he would leave.

Thx.. Hope you are wrong.

One of our recent transfer portal departures is a kid that played at the high school I attended, and one of my former HS classmates is actually an assistant coach with the football team there. I texted him to see what the heck is going on because I knew that the kid who left, he and his family were always huge UNC fans. The response that I got was that "y'all have a shitshow going on over there in your program with the front office people." Obviously that's incredibly vague (and the guy isn't a UNC fan himself from what I remember, let's put it that way, so I have to take it with a huge grain of salt). I'll try to see if he'd be willing to provide further context but I'm guessing not.

At any rate, it at least makes me feel that it's more probable what Ben, Buck, Greg, Tommy, and Jason are alluding to with regard to Lombardi being a cancer in the program.
Why would a guy like Dalton Sneed convince his bro Carson to come here instead of Tenn if it was that bad?

I highly doubt it’s that bad for all players. When you have a locker room of 105 guys, there is bound to be widely varying opinions and views on how things are going. It’s been pretty widely reported that the Mack Brown era holdover guys aren’t having the same experience as the Bill Belichick era guys.

I have had conversations with one very close friend who is one of the above named people at IC and he assures me that whatever my low opinion is of the state of the program, the reality is far worse.
Is your friend truly "inside"? It feels like so many former insiders are now just adjacent speculators. This horrible picture was depicted by insiders of locker room disaster after Clemson, then the team plays hard vs Cal, UVA and actually competes hard, looking like a team that lacks talent, but not one rife with dissension.

We land '26 and '27 recruits from Rolesville that could go plenty of places. True frosh Xavier was at Rolesville last yr, wouldn't he warm off Marquis Bryant and the Griffin-Haynes bros in if it was that bad?

I don’t mean to speak for WMHeel but his friend is about as inside as you can possibly be, and is not prone to hyperbole.

I never took the locker room disaster histrionics to mean that the players were in open rebellion against one another or against the coach. I took it to mean that there is generally a culture of favoritism, lack of accountability, and possibly some general distrust amongst different factions.

Also flipping recruits from Texas, PSU, FSU and others. I think who leaves through portal will say a lot. But clearly there are lots of players who believe in BB.

That's a sound take.

Tangent regarding favoritism, can we get some examples?
On recently discussed guys, Tyler Thompson had a fantastic yr this yr compared to last, he was well utilized. Jake Johnson played most TE snaps, though maybe he could have played more. Maybe Hood or Gause though June deserved carries. Defensively I wasn't begging for backups from the prior regime, though the coaches certainly love Leroy Jackson, Will Hardy, Cost and Marcus Allen.
