Keep in mind, we flipped a lot of recruits because we drastically outbid their previous school. Don Callahan himself confirmed this. I’m not saying that was wrong of us or anything- just cautioning against reading too much into the ‘why’ of high school recruits signing with us. Vodney Cleveland, for example, was offered a very substantial larger amount by UNC than Texas, and Texas was not willing to increase. Same with the defensive back we flipped from Miami.
We spent almost $12 million I believe on this high school recruiting class. It should not be a stretch for anyone to believe that many of those recruits are here specifically because the financial package they were offered by UNC is more lucrative than the one which they were offered by other schools. I think it would be pretty naïve to think otherwise, actually. Likewise, I also have no doubt that there are recruits in this class who are here altruistically because they want to be coached by someone who was known as the greatest NFL coach of all time. It’s definitely not zero sum.
If we somehow don’t lose any more major contributors beyond Tyler Thompson, and if we somehow start racking up major instant impact portal players in droves at all or most of our positions of greatest need in January, then I’ll think that rumors of a chaotic Carolina Football program might be greatly exaggerated. Until then, there are many flashing warning signs that, to me at least, are acting as a canary in the coal mine.
